I think it’s because he tells them what they want to hear.

But all the politicians do that. You wouldn't get elected if you told people the truth. Why does it work so well for him?

I can kinda understand why they like him, he's almost the perfect Republican politician, but the love they have for him just seems insane when you consider all of his flaws.

How did Trump build up such an insane cult of personality? I really don't get the appeal. Do you understand it?
Somehow they believe that he represents them whereas other politicians represent themselves. Maybe it's because they think he built an empire himself and they think they can do the same thing. Maybe it's because he always eats fast food and people relate to that.

Maybe it's because he has gone to rallies and campaigned for 4 straight years, and at all of these public speeches he has used very simple language. His speeches are, on average, a 4th grade reading level compared to past presidents at 9th grade reading level: SAGE Journals: Your gateway to world-class research journals

But all the politicians do that.

But, they don't. They do it to the critical number that will get them elected.

And that is the point, Trump has failed to get elected. He is a political failure.

The GOP needs to grow a pair now and determine that they can get elected without letting the tail wag the dog.

His incompetence ruined his reelection chances. In all honestly, he would have won if covid hadn't happened or if he had handled it better.

I don't know. He presented himself as this outsider but then he just did the same shit Republicans always do. I don't know.

I want to go abroad again. I'm tired of US politics.

I'll let the pro analysts go over the data, but my hunch is that he didn't attract enough votes from women. It may surprise many people, but authoritarian governments are kept in power by the female vote.

It's an interesting one, I think part of it, was he was willing to tell people what they wanted to hear.

While all politicians do that, Trump went beyond the normal white lies, saying Mexicans are rapists and other vile shit. While shocking to normal people, it something his supporters already felt quite comfortable with, they just never felt able to say that in public. He made the outcasts in society for part of society.

It's strange as you would never imagine a billionaire New Yorker, who dodged his military service would ever appeal to this audience, but he has.

If Ted Cruz thinks he can be Trump Mark-II, by repeating the same old lines and expect the carry his supporters, I think he's in for a shock.

^^ this, this is what should be troubling America right now.

After looking at the shit show of the last four years, why did 70-odd million say "more of that please"

You know how the rest of the world jokes about how stupid and lazy Americans are?

Trump's cult is the group of people they were inspired by.

They were encouraged to be uneducated, to take the short-cuts in life (even though they think they some boot-strapped fuckers, it's a lie they believe about themselves) and to be as selfish as they wanted to be.

They saw/heard Trump and his bullshit and it was like that first needle shooting that soothing serum into their bloodstreams. They were hooked instantly.

I'm generalizing, but yeah. The ones who would watch him shoot someone on 5th Avenue and still Support him? Yeah... They're just proof that America is not as great as they claim it is.

The laziness bit really gets me.

I remember NPR had an interview with an unemployed former factory worker. He tried to transition to office work but couldn't do it. Why? Well, he couldn't figure out how to use emails and didn't like not being able to smoke on the job.

Entitled bitches.

One could ask the same question about Jim Jones, David Koresh or at the risk of bringing up Godwin's Law...you know who.

I believe there has always been a certain percentage of people, whether through nature, nurture or a sub-par education, that has been malleable to even obvious bullshit and especially when espoused by an authoritarian "daddy" leader.

Then there are at least a good amount of this country that apparently likes to hear what he has to say as it is the same derogatory things they wish they could openly say.

Add to all this the Republicans have done such a masterful job since at least the 80's convincing their base the opposition will institute Marxism, confiscate thier guns and make evey man marry another man and every woman have an abortion should any Democrat ever win an election. All while the Democrats, buying into the narrative, run away from anything that remotely whiffs of "liberal".

Plus I think as a matter of psychological make up, conservatives love to see themselves as underdogs and victims.

This is the second time I have seen it. Trump harnessed the power of social media and an anti-government persona to dupe and manipulate people to beat a weak candidate (Clinton).

Hillary thanks to her previous political history, her over confidence & taking the black vote for granted and her real life toxic reputation played right into the hands of and helped enable the orange turd who played the electoral game and won. Had Hillary made a more concerted effort for the black vote and eased up on lumping all the deplorable's together she probably would have beaten him. Trump said the magic words the blue collar types wanted to hear.

I called a Biden & Harris ticket nearly two years ago and watching Harris so far I could easily see her becoming the first female president.

I am hoping Biden sets her lose to organize a whole of government approach to take down the Hitler youth movement and to "lock them up"

If she does well I could see myself voting for her on her own merit in the future (unless she picked a tool for a running mate like the late John McCain did).

While I disagree with some of their politics, they are honorable and want to do the right thing even when no one is watching.

Social media is largely to blame. He was very adept at using it and manipulating people with his lies and misinformation. Also, as stupid and incompetent as he is, he’s charismatic. He was an awful businessman, but he had a successful television show. It wouldn’t have been successful if he didn’t have any sort of charisma. I think many people, particularly Americans, have a hard time determining what’s real and what’s not real. I’m sure there are plenty of people who don’t realize Keeping Up With the Kardashians is scripted. Americans worship celebrities. Many people care about their opinions for some reason, even on issues in which they’re not experts, such as politics. Trump is like this culmination of this celebrity culture.
