BUt whenever I read te threads on this site I wonder....why do we care so much? It's certainly not because our partners will like us more, because that's a very small minority of people. Do we feel more dominant? Do we consider it a surrogate of our abilities in this world?

I think it's a manifestation of men's essentially competitive nature. We all seem to want to know how we stack up by objective measures like salary, educational attainment, athletic feats, etc., and this seems to be a straightforward, (in theory) easily measurable way of establishing yet another pecking order. Absent any other widely accepted, objective means of evaluating male bodies -- beauty being in the eye of the beholder, and all that -- I think a lot of men use penis size as a proxy for broader physical appeal.

I started measuring mine for exactly that reason, I was concerned with whether or not I would be able to please any partners I may have. It was the focal point of my insecurities when I was younger. I like talking about it because it demystifies it, makes it somehow more tangeble.

It has a lot to do with psychiatric stuff, its a need to be more dominant or manly, as men we see a big dick as showing us to either have more testosterone or more manliness and thus making us the alpha male of a group. I think Steve26's analysis is a good one...we often do look for ways of outdoing our peers. However, penis size is a relatively private measure (except for sites like these) so perhaps it's really to escape feelings of public insecurity and knowing that, "despite whatver happens out there...my dick is bigger"
