DavidH makes a good point. The idea all government is inherently evil is corrosive. That's like saying a gun is evil. People who own corporations make out that government is somehow a living being when really it is an inefficient but necessary way of running the economy.

How could you run the economy without central government? There have been more communist countries than Ayn Rand style libertarian countries.

The ones who shout loudest about big government in any nation whenever health and safety legislature, regulation of banks or access to higher education come up never say a word about the billions spent to sustain massive armies, police forces and security forces, or the millions spent on various vice squads that achieve nothing.

It's alright to have big corporations but not big government. A corporation can never be evil or oppress people is obviously naive beyond measure. How many corporations hire private security or pay paramilitary groups to act in their own interest. How many private armies are there in the world? How many people have Blackwater killed in Iraq?

The question is who controls the government? Lobby groups or the people who elect them? It is coming up to 100 years since Arizona, the last mainland state was admitted to the union, a long time. Is there really any reason to keep them?
