Lol, have you ever watched a rugby game? When a rugby player is stopped by a 20 stone guy play doesn't stop but all the other 20 stone guys from both teams jump on top. I think it's appropriately called a 'maul'.
I'm too skinny to play but I remember watching a kid get his pelvis broken in a tackle when I was at school

Sure I've watched rugby. My point is not that rugby players aren't tough. They are, obviously. Its a rough game.

My point is that calling NFL players wimps for wearing pads is laughably shortsighted. They're tough too. Tough, strong and fast.

Besides, are injuries like broken hips desireable?

It's a good thing I enjoy hockey :)

If the American public cared about soccer American teams would dominate the sport - all the good players would follow the money.
As I remember, America normaly only dominates sports that only they play. For example a US a team always wins the world series (odd that)
And when you do venture out and compete against the world e.g. Olympic basketball you win bronze (2004) even though no other countries would list it as one of their popular sports!

That's one way to piss off 5 billion people! You never use the "S" word! It's football !
Ha/ha. It (soccer) does deserve to be called football since kicking it is the primary method of handling the ball for more than 95% of the game. As opposed to North American football where the ball is handled with the, um, hands 95% of the time, not withstanding that the kick-offs, punts, place kicks and the rarely used drop kicks do actually involve feet briefly kicking the ball. Curious eh?

But being North American, and having played our football as a youth, I still have to say no matter what the name is, it was a hugely enjoyable game to play, almost as fun as hockey. Soccer and lacrosse and baseball also rate up there, but not as highly, in my experience.

And what about the Irish sport of hurling? That's rad isn't it? The only hurling I've done was in high school and college (after too much drinking)

either singles or doubles on a three-walled court (frontón) with a hard rubber ball (pelota) that is hurled with a wicker basket (cesta) attached to the player's arm. The sport is popular in Latin America, and is played in some states (e.g., Florida and Connecticut) where jai alai betting is legal.

and the only edges it has are the ticket shark fins outside the major arenas trying to scalp you from a fortune to get in. Not worth the money, nor the effort .

And as a proud gay man, I can do without their miserable homophobic
attitude. When the NFL finally owns up to the fact they have a significant number of closeted players, and stop harrassing them, maybe then it will be worthy of my time. Until then, they can all kiss my brown latino ass. I will be playing soccer with my students.....

Football legend George Best dies

George Best had suffered weeks of ill-health

Football legend George Best has died in hospital at the age of 59.
Best died in intensive care at 1255 GMT on Friday following "a long and very valiant fight", said a statement from west London's Cromwell Hospital.
His family, including son Calum, 24, and father Dickie, 87, had kept an all-night vigil at his bedside.
The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star had multiple organ failure following a lung infection and internal bleeding, after weeks of ill health.
Republic of Ireland Prime Minister Bertie Ahern led tributes, describing Best as one of his "one of the best players the world has ever seen".
"In the days ahead people will struggle with words to try to describe his talent," Mr Ahern said.
"In this regard George should be remembered as the very best at what he did. He was quite simply a football genius."

The hospital statement continued: "The thoughts of all staff at Cromwell Hospital are with Mr Best's family at this time."
Best had been in hospital since entering with flu-like symptoms on 1 October, later suffering a kidney infection.
Best, a recovering alcoholic, was particularly susceptible to infection because of medicines he needed after a 2002 liver transplant.
The Belfast-born former footballer and television pundit had been prescribed medication to suppress the immune system and prevent his body rejecting the new liver.

At the time of his hospital admission in October, Best's agent Phil Hughes said his client had been "off the drink" before being admitted to the hospital.
Best is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced the British and world game.
His heyday occurred during the 1960s, and he brought a pop star image to the game for the first time.
But the accompanying champagne and playboy lifestyle degenerated into alcoholism, bankruptcy, a prison sentence for drink-driving and, eventually, his controversial liver transplant.
He helped Manchester United win the First Division title in 1965 and 1967 and the European Cup in 1968. His role in the team's success was recognised by his becoming the European Footballer of the Year in 1968.
Best made 466 appearances for the Old Trafford club, scoring a total of 178 goals. He also won 37 caps - scoring nine goals - for Northern Ireland.

As a yank, I was surprised when I read the obit and they listed George Best's height as 5' 5". Talk about a powerhouse of talent in a minuscule package. He also seemed to live by the credo "live fast and leave a well worn corpse." That picture shows one of the world's oldest 59 year-olds.

For me, Football is boring as hell.

It also aggrivates me that theyre making MILLIONS of dollars to throw a ball around a field, and they call it "Work".

I also agree with CruzTbone... Most of them are very homophobic, even though they know they have bi/gay players, so I don't even like to give them my time as it's just supporting them.

I'd rather go wrench on my cars. It's more fun, challenging, rewarding, and I can blow their $100K Hummers and Mercedees off the road with my Rusty $10K "piece of shit".

I would caution those who think that America really doesnt like football/soccer. Ever since Freddy Adu joined MLS ESPN has covered him and the MLS more closely. MLS is experiencing a lof of expansion already has a handful of SSS(soccer specific stadiums).

Soccer also is quite popular among US High School Students but the lack of an established Pro Leauge keeps many of them from pursuing playing at the Collegiate and Pro levels. As MLS grows and players command higher salaries so will overall national intrest.
