Oh they have 'em - they just don't use them.

Not really.
They are soixante-dix, quatre-vingt, and quatre-vingt-dix.

Quatre-vingt is just the word for eighty - the concept is the same - there is not multiplication involved - quatre-vingt-un, quatre-vingt-deux follows just as naturally as eighty-one, eighty-two. Same with soixante-dix really - it's just the way it's done - you say soixante and then count to nineteen. There's no extra mental leap needed.

You make my point.

septante - Wiktionary
huitante - Wiktionary
nonante - Wiktionary

huitante

  1. (obsolete except in Switzerland or dialects) eighty Il écrivait huitante mots.
  1. France is the only nation to have an official board to manage their language / lexicon therefore the fact that it's obsolete means that it is not in their language at all.
The same follow for the rest of the terms shown. Old dialects / obsolete language is null and void.

I'm hungry.

Now I need a bong hit.

Me too - but that's not unusual

Not really.
They are soixante-dix, quatre-vingt, and quatre-vingt-dix.

You know as well as I do that Mem meant French has no derived word for 7 to the 10, 8 to the 10, 9 to the 10 - and it does (septante, huitante, nonante). Of course they have common words that mean 70, 80, 90 - that's not the same thing.

Oh, picky picky picky.
Don't you mean, Mem meant no underived words.
Surely soixante-dix, etc., are derived.
Unless, on a Friday afternoon, I am even more of a blockhead than usual.

If I recall, that part of their counting system is a relic of vigesimal, which is what the roman system is called. Base 20.
With the romans, 20 was as much 4 groups of 5 as it was two groups of 10.

And there I go again being pedantic instead of sexy.

Good question.
1) They don't.
2) Their real secret is that they're sexy without being sexual.
(Many exceptions, of course.)

Ah, but they do get so many things done, and always have done. In fact, they get them done because of all these reasons that might lead one to think they didn't get anything done. It is hardly difficult to see their accomplishments, and I'd differ with you in that they are both sexy and sexual; I spent a large amount of time when I was 20 in Paris in 69 positions, and I have always thought my best pregnancies were a result of that...

I suspected as much.
I knew it was going on somewhere ... only not in my vicinity.
Actually, I was being facetious ... but, that said, I always thought that, libinal though they may be (I mean, hey ... they're human), the image of being sexual was more important than the fact.

It surely is a lot of the time, but I think it may seem that way from cultural products and from distance than when we are close up, at which time their ability to simply throw off a whiff of quiff in quite the way they do a creme fraiche sauce can be...most inspiring...verging on inspirational..xxxx
