I didn't used to be but I found that the concern you give towards other people are repaid with judgment and disrespect. Not that I expect anything in return, I'm just doing my bit towards "a better society", but I absolutely do not expect anything bad in return. Also, people around us tend to, perhaps unconsciously, impose their definitions of who you are and we then respond to these in order to conform. If one doesn't become apathetic to all this then one might lose his real self. I guess I'm not apathetic by nature, I just need to choose to be sometimes.

To quote a comedian, who I can;t remember now, on one of his routines about his father..."Son, life is a swirling, sucking pool of despair, filled with false hope, in an ever darkening universe...Gee, dad, if you don;t want to lend the car to me, just say so..."

I'm not always apathetic you know. It's only when something exciting happens or when I'm forced to be happy. Otherwise I'm just like every other American out there.
