    Welcome to Roddenberry.com

NEW YORK – Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the widow of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, has died. She was 76. Roddenberry, an actress who appeared in numerous "Star Trek" TV shows and movies, died Thursday of leukemia at her home in Bel-Air, Calif., her representative said.

At Roddenberry's side were family friends and her only son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr. Gene Roddenberry died in 1991.

Her romance with Roddenberry earned her the title "The First Lady of Star Trek." A fixture in the "Star Trek" franchise, her roles included Nurse Christine Chapel in the original "Star Trek," Lwaxana Troi in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every spin-off of the 1966 cult series. She recently reprised the voice role in the upcoming "Star Trek" film directed by J.J. Abrams.

She is the only person to have appeared in every iteration of Star Trek. In the pilot she played the first officer, in the original series she played Nurse Christine Chapel, in the Next Generation series she played Counselor Troi's colorful, liberated mother, Lwaxana, and in every version of Star Trek she played the voice of the computer. Majel Barrett has one of the most recognizable voices in the world.

Majel Barrett, as with fellow Star Trek alumna Nichelle Nichols, advanced the television presence of strong women in traditional male roles.

I will miss her . She seemed like a wonderful woman.

Another bit of my personal history fades into oblivion...

I am very sad...I really enjoyed her presence in all the Star Trek series taking place in the XXIVth century. Lwaxana Troi was a lovely and much beloved role...a funny and profound female role. I am going to miss her so much...but she will remain in my mind as long as I stay alive.
I LOVE YOU MAJEL BARRETT...MAY YOU REACH THE MOST DISTANT STARS, WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE...MAY YOU SHARE THESE STARS WITH YOUR -and our- BELOVED GENE RODDENBERRY.

What a year for all of us who believe in a positive and bright future's world: first Arthur C. Clarke, now this wonderful woman...

Well she lived a full life and was involved in a show/genre that had millions of fans, I'm sure she led a full life and I hope a happy one as well.

Plus she was kinda a hottie playing Counselor Troi's mother on the Next Generation, regardless of age.

I always thought it was a pity that she was "demoted" to playing a nurse (a traditional female role and also a supportive/subordinate role) when she started off as the first officer. Although I have nothing against Nurse Chapel, she isn't a very important or interesting character. "Number One" was much more interesting. (I also preferred her long, brunette hair to the blonde beehive.)

I also thought it was interesting that in the pilot the Captain uses the naval tradition of addressing his first officer as "Number One," which doesn't reappaer until The Next Generation, with Picard and Riker.

    I feel the same way.

    I hope so, too.

Agreed. I loved Lwaxana. Although on the surface she seemed frivolous and annoying, deep down she was kind, compassionate, and wise. She taught us not to take things too seriously, to have fun, and to enjoy ourselves.
