I'm referring to increasing murmurings of making the vaccine mandatory, or at least to track who does and does not opt to receive it, and also the popular trend of moralistic bullying of anyone who so much as questions the motives of those who are producing and administering the vaccines; this reads more to me like many national governments are getting something out of the vaccine with respect to popular compliance, and that many folk are getting a self-righteousness itch scratched by being enabled to vent outrage at those who are not readily complying, perhaps also reflecting a need to make others absolutely beholden to one's ideals.
Ok. Can't say that kinda talk has been replicated her in the UK, the emphasis is very much on the voluntary... and it goes back to my original point that making the vaccine compulsory would have all kinds of unpleasant, unintended consequences.

Who's voices are say this out of interest?

For what it's worth, I'm not sure who in the U.S.--at least, with any authority to make it happen--is saying this, either.

I certainly don't want government overreach, and any possibility of increased surveillance should be scrutinized. But at a certain point some amount of government control over our behavior may be necessary. Seat belt laws and TSA screenings at airports were controversial when they came online, but we take them for granted now. Are any of us less free because of them? In fact, we may be more free because of them (insofar as we are free to fly without fear of the plane being hijacked).

My Canadian friend is baffled by how many Americans object to something like a mask mandate. According to him, Canadians generally view their government as something that supports them. Are Canadians somehow more oppressed than Americans?

BTW, the Chinese government is pointing to the poor example of the US and saying "You may not like how heavy handed our response was, but at least we care enough to not let over 2,000 people die every day." I'm not trying to defend everything about their approach here, and god knows they fucked up by letting the virus get out of hand in the first place. But what the US is doing (or not doing really) has been an absolute failure of imagination.

For what it's worth, I'm not sure who in the U.S.--at least, with any authority to make it happen--is saying this, either.

Even though I (respecfully!) disagree with you on some points, I am with you 100% on all the self-righteous moralizing. Shaming other people only serves to make you feel better about yourself and won't do anything to change anyone's mind. I wish more people would realize that.

Here in the UK, the vaccine will be voluntary, but with every decision comes consequences - and if you chose not to have the vaccine, you will need to suck up those consequences

There may be activities that you can no longer do, and it's very likely without the vaccine you won't be getting on an international flight of holidaying in a foreign country (for probably 5 years ish)

I Don't care about moralising you for refusing the vaccine, if it doesn't impact my life I don't care, but you are going to find life doesn't go back to normal for you, and thats due to your decision

Sounds harsh, but it's true

Now. Make your decision and deal with it. I know I will

I got the Moderna vaccine last Thursday. I will have the booster in four weeks. For two days my arm was very sore. On the second day I had about a 12 hour window that I felt fatigued with mild bodyaches and chills. I took Tylenol and went to bed. On the third day the arm pain was significantly less and I’m fine. I’ve had friends as well as family members affected by this terrible virus. Some have died and others are recovering much later. I made the decision that the benefits far outweigh the risk of getting the vaccine. Please stay safe and I hope all of you remain well.

Consequences of the Attacks of the Anti-vaxxers:
US pharmacist who tried to ruin Covid vaccine doses is a conspiracy theorist, police say

A Wisconsin pharmacist, Steven Brandenburg, convinced the world was “crashing down” told police he tried to ruin hundreds of doses of coronavirus vaccine, because he believed the shots would mutate people’s DNA, according to court documents released on Monday.

Misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccines has surged online with false claims circulating on everything from the vaccines’ ingredients to possible side-effects. One of the earliest false claims suggested that the vaccines could alter DNA. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine as well as the Moderna vaccine rely on messenger RNA or mRNA, which is a fairly new technology used in vaccines that experts have been working on for years. Such vaccines help train the immune system to identify the spike protein on the surface of the coronavirus and create an immune response. Experts have said there is no truth to the claims that the vaccines can genetically modify humans.

Jeff Bahr, the Advocate Aurora Health Care chief medical group officer, has said Brandenburg admitted that he deliberately removed the vials from refrigeration at the Grafton medical center overnight on 24 December into 25 December, returned them, then left them out again on the night of 25 December into Saturday. A pharmacy technician discovered the vials outside the refrigerator on 26 December.

Judge Paul Malloy ordered Brandenburg held on a $10,000 signature bond on the condition that he surrender his firearms, not work in healthcare and have no contact with Aurora employees.

Don't worry. At "Warp Speed", everyone in America should be vaccinated within ten years. That will be enough time to decide about it.

So far "Operation Warp Speed" has been as successful as the hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back. While I'm already committed to taking it when it's available to the regular masses, but fully don't expect that to happen till most of this new year has already passed.
