The earth will always be here and life will always be here, at least until the sun goes supernova.

Genius. I guess you missed the part where they explained that solitary main-sequence stars (like our sun) don't contain nearly enough mass to go supernova. Or even nova, for that matter.

The point of environmental awareness is not preservation of the Earth. To suppose that we as a species possess the power to destroy the planet is ludicrous...as is the supposition that we lack the power to destroy Earth's ability to support organic life. The point is to preserve the planet's biosphere.

It seems the two little ditzbrained gadflies were challenged by a reporter a < SHOCK ! SURPRISE! > didn't come across too well!

You mean a celebrity was unable to articulate in detail the scientific merits of an academic study? Great scott! I was under the impression that all professional athletes and entertainers were required to hold at least one Ph.D.!

I did get a kick out of the blogger's sense of incredulous indignation that one of these entertainers might respond with an exhortation to watch the movie. He was aghast at the suggestion,
seeming to somehow believe that the movie simply Gore's opinion. Heaven forbid he actually watch the flim himself...he might have saved himself some face by realizing that, like most documentaries, it's a collection of data and opinions (many scientific) that have been compiled into a cohesive story for general (i.e. non-academic) audiences.

I suppose that's lost on you, though, as it detracts from the "wow" factor of having put two entertainers who dared to try to use their public visibility for a good cause in their place.

AWW idn't that spayshul.

Of course . They're liberals. Liberals always want to do great things.

Oh wait , my bad. They always seem to want EVERYBODY ELSE to do good things.
Additionally, when the global warming warrior hits the road, her touring entourage (and equipment) travels inthree tractor trailers, four buses, and six cars. Now that's a carbon footprint! (4 pages)

I do seem to remember something about that. I would really prefer a supernova. So all we get is what, a brown dwarf? Maybe by then we'll figure out how to throw some gas giants in to stoke the fire.

This can be annoying. I had it put to me similarly the other day. As if Gore's "documentary" is the final word. Just watch that, you'll know all you'll ever need to know.

I don't even have a house and I walk every day to work. It took fewer carbon units to make my shoes than your bike. Suck on that, bitch.

LMAO.

I always wondered why they never introduced themselves as "Dr. So-and-so" :biggrin1:

Sheryl Crow does what left wingers here do. They accept info from sources that support their political beliefs.

Never bother to educate themselves on the subject.

Yeah Zora.

I guess we'll have to wait for Democrats. Under them , the FDA never fucks up, no cronies are ever hired and all Government programs work like clockwork. Every agency is allowed to say whatever they want even if it contradicts the Administration.

{ tick ...tick...tick..waiting for the obligatory " I don't like Democrtas either". }

No, dems are not perfect, no one is. It's a matter of degrees (get it- GW, degrees). Do you know what a straw-man argument is?

I am frequently in a foul mood, and I enjoy having someone like you around to kick once in a while, but you don't get my jokes, ignore even the basics of my posts, change my words around so we only end up discussing what I never said. I did this to you once recently, and you just didn't get it at all. Nomatter, I had a good laugh at your expense.

You are a useless turd, other than for comic relief.

That's the pot calling the kettle jet black.

You must be referring to the last thread you started on this subject.

There are significant things that we can do to slow global warming, assuming we really have anything to do with it. I'm willing to believe we have some effect. When you can see smog in the air, there is an effect that we can't ascribe to nature.

Anyway, I am more interested in talking about what we can do now. We've got maybe fifty years of fossil fuels left. It only makes business sense to turn elsewhere and this will naturally occur. Meanwhile, an incandescent lightbulb was revolutionary a hundred years ago, but they are actually heaters that happen to put out light also. About eight percent of the energy they put out is in the visible spectrum.

Power crises like the Enron debacle are artificial emergencies. If everyone went to Home Depot tomorrow and replaced all their lightbulbs, millions of tons of fossil fuels would not get burned this year.

If you put a great deal of faith in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, you would think so. There's no way to tell for sure without waiting a few billion years to see.

There's even some observational data which supports the H-R diagram. More than there is for "global warming", anyway. Both are a wee bit slimmer than most realize.

No. Brown dwarf never really got going. Supernova remnant is a neutron star, maybe. Black hole, maybe. Hard to say, as there's not really all that much data. We can't even see black holes, as they're invisible, and all. We have to look for their footprints. Regular everyday star ends up as a white dwarf, after it's over its profligate youth. Maybe. Ours is a yellow dwarf. Small and dim, but it works well for us. If Betelgeuse or Rigel were where the sun is, we'd be crispy critters, if not plasma.

Astronomy's fun, too. And simpler than atmospheric dynamics.

I thought the sun was medium-sized.

Back to the original subject:

Ms. Crow OBVIOUSLY has no clue what Taco Bell's "Chili Bean Burrito" does to a person's innards post-digestion.....

1 sheet..... pffft. Maybe for my nose......

Isn't even reading the pamphlet before jumping to a conclusion a bit restrictive? As in, all that "linear thinking" just leads to headaches.

Yup. If I was given 5 minutes of training in a complex field, then urged to get up of stage and try to regurgitate my "The Environment For Dummies" training manual, I would run the other way. Although in her defence, all of us have basic opinions on most subjects, even though very few have the time (or intellectual capacity) to explore the issues beyond the "linear thinking" phase to get a true understanding. The difference with the average schmuck is that he/she won't go beyond just boring his/her friends with his clueless ranting.

Time to start a SHTPC (aka Shit House Toilet Paper Credits) system
whereby the men who use less toilet paper than females (add up all those pee mop ups ladies) can sell or trade their surplus credits.

Then we start adding up all the cellulose that goes into pads and liners and I think we'll have enough credits for our sex to finance at least a month long Superbowl annual holiday, a World Cup every year, and get our laundry done for free.

*Wonders the bartering value of these credits towards blowjobs.*

I thought the sun was medium-sized.

By some measures, yes. A common classification scheme makes it a yellow dwarf. There are other classificaiton schemes, though. The sun is about 800,000 miles in diameter, not counting the corona. A white dwarf is some 5,000 to 10,000 miles in diameter. The variable supergiant Betelgeuse varies from 500 to 800 times the sun's diameter, which would put his outer regions 'way out past the orbit of Mars if he was where the sun is. But he's not particularly hot as stars go. Canopus is 65 times the sun's diameter, and 14,000 times the brightness. Rigel is some 60-odd solar diameters across, and 40,000 times as bright. Antares is about 700 solar diameters, and about 10,000 times the brightness in the visible band. But Antares has a huge output in the infrared, so his total energy output is about 65,000 times that of the sun.

I'm particularly fond of Antares as he was the first star I ever identified by eye, solely by color.

The largest known star may be the variable VY in Canis Major, at something like 2000 solar diameters; or, VY may be a mere 500 solar diameters; it depends on whose model you pick.

Any of the supergiants would crowd the ol' sun up against the "dwarf" end of the scale.

All these numbers are revised on occasion. Generally, the stars are too small to resolve into disks; their actual images are smaller than their diffraction patterns. So, measurements of brightness (usually pretty good) and measurements of distance (usually pretty bad) can be plugged into the equations (inverse-square law, basically) and an absolute brightness figure calculated; from that, theories of mass vs. luminosity and luminosity + spectral class vs. size are invoked to estimate the size. A very few supergiants, such as Betelgeuse, are large enough and close enough to image directly, albeit poorly.
