I built 4 poster bed with PORCH POSTS (!) from Home Depot. Framed with 2 x 8's top and bottom around a king size mattress set. Massive, massive bed. Wood "roof" on the bed is lined with mirrors for the very reason you state above. Sometimes a sling hangs from the upper 2x8 frame. Two straight guys from work helped me build it! LOL
