Allen's films strike me the same way those of Mel Brooks do: they were great when I was a kid and then I grew-up-- except the films of Brooks were funny.

heh heh...true.
while Brooks himself is not so funny, though, his films are...you can still watch Blazing Saddles and History of the World, and love the other stuff most notably Harvey Korman as Hedley Lamarr, and as the Count De Money (de monet, de monet)
I'm more the Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety sort.
If you type in: woody allen molestation
into Google then there are other articles from sites such as CNN which confirm that Woody Allen had sexual relations with his 17 year old stepdaughter
I Really liked The Purple Rose of Cairo but then I like Mia Farrow.
His personal life certainly hurt his career.
Sorry dreamer20 ... I think Miss Farrow's quote in her book sums it up the best... "You don't f**K the children!"
He will always be a pedophile in my book and subsequently whatever respect I ever had for him as a director has vanished.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Keaton get the Oscar for "Annie Hall" as something of a booby prize because the Academy felt that the film she truly should've earned it for, "Looking For Mr. Goodbar", was a bit too lurid to award a leading performance Oscar for?Annie Hall. All that screaming and carrying on in that scene involving the lobster in his kitchen. I love Diane Keaton but come on, that mess is not the comedic film noir (sorry, that was the first descriptive that popped into mah wee head) it was intended to be.

I believe you are correct.
I really have never "got it"...when it comes to his films...seen tons of them.
they all bore me.
when you look at it, he seems to have inadvertently been the creator of the modern "romantic comedy" in many ways.
that being said, though, i have tremendous respect for his independence, his avoidance of the Hollywood system, and his nonchalance and pessimistic nature with regards to award shows and honors.
he steers his own course, and always has
for that, i admire him immensely. he is truly a rare bird in that regard, and on that note, he wins tremendous plaudits from me.
