Oh no! Didn't realise Cahill had been sent off. I saw the last 10 mins or so, and wondered where he was. :/

Poor ol Aussies - at least it makes England's result seem more palatable. :p

Bafana Bafana did SA proud! Considering that they never displayed any discipline before and frankly, played like crap. But, after winning 12 friendlies consecutively and drawing with Mexico, they might've just acquired the lacking confidence to become a force to be reckoned with in years to come. Well, one can only hope!
Anyway, it was a great opening goal!
AYOBA LADUMA!

The thing is that nowhere in the rulebook there is something about tackling from behind, the question is when has a tackling from behind to be considered a serious foul play or even violent.
Normally the line is when a player deliberately risks the injury of another player, but as long as the legs are bend that is hardly the case.
With at least one leg extended it should have been a red card, but in thzis case he was just sliding in to him, bending his knees to take away from the impact of the collision. That should not have been a red card even tho it was a tackle from behind.

And yes there are Vuvuzelas in germany, unfortunately even tho the use is prohibited in many areas because of the noise. But only the use, not the selling of it.

Even though the use might be prohibited, due to the noise, many people still use it. And in my one cow village (might be 2 cows and a few pigs and hens) there is no Police Station. So people walk home from watching soccer in the Pub (we only have one) and blow their Vuvuzelas. Give up trying to call the Police, they arrive 30 minutes later.

Its the same in cities with several police stations, i guess the only place they are not is where public viewing takes place.
its like the honking idiots, that is prohibited too, but you will experience it in every city after every win of any nation of which more than 10 people are residents in that city.

It is in the rulebook. Under referee disgression. You'll notice that each football competition, from the EPL to the Bundesliga to MLS has its own standard for calling certain types of fouls. Cahill's tackle might not have been even carded in the EPL. The World Cup, as a competition, is no different. The Fifa Technical committee determines their interpretation of the beautiful game, and instruct the referees to carry out this interpretation. Cahill's card has been consistent with the increasingly harsh crackdown on tackling from behind, which is a specific issue that FIFA began highlighting as far back as the '98 tournament. Pay attention, and you will notice that the vast majority of tackles from behind that bring down a player will result in at least a yellow card.

It is not in the rulebook, the only time a tackle from behind is mentioned at least as far as i know is the following paragraph:

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball with from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force is and endangering the safety of the opponent is guilty of serious foul play

That is why i pointed out that Cahil did pull both legs back went in with both legs bended and without excessive force, therefor it was a foul play but not a serious foul play, this should not be a red card on any level, not a world cup not any league. A yellow card can be given, but red is just not what the rulebook suggest for this situation, not even since the WC98.

I thought the Australian Goalkeeper was really really bad. If they've had a better Goalkepper, we might not have scored as much.

the germans were class tonight, fair play.

Although Craig Moore and Lucas Neil are probably the worst CB pairing in the WC.

he usually is not bad, he has shown his talent against germany before, but he did not have a great game, and obviously the red card helped, tho germany was clearly better over the entire game. But with all due respect Australia can not be the indicator for germany, the group is relatively weak, i think we have to wait till the knock out stages to see how good this team really is.

Germany were great. The only caveat (apart from having four Poles, a Turk and a Brazilian) is whether the Aussies made good look great.

Anyway, game on.

Still haven't seen Cahill's foul - but since it was apparently a tackle from behind it makes it more understandable; they're frowned upon pretty heavily in the UK Premier League anyway.

Where would be the best place to see a WC match in SA? Durban, J'burg, Cape Town, Pretoria? Far too late to go to any I know, but just speculating. :)

There are 10 other players on that field and if they all played the way they were suppose too, the keeper would never have to touch the ball. So he is only as bad as his team makes him look.

The best defense is a good offense.

What's the big deal with the mix? That's what Europe is. If they are from Germany that's the only thing that matters. Should they all have blonde hair and blue eyes? And the Germans made thenselves look great, not Australia. Precision.
