In my humble opinion (lol) I think reenactments are supposed to bring to life more than the carnage, but the reasons behind the war. Playing a part, especially the 'enemy' can literally bring their POV alive for you. You might not agree with the enemy and so on, but you would have a better understanding of why they did this or that. Reenactments are also a good example of our past in living color -- for kids to see, and realize it's not just history -- in a book -- but it really happened and real people were hurt.

There are renaissance festivals all over my neck of the woods(New England) and yet the renaissance happened in Europe....

But why would there be so very many low-information guys take part in such things? Not to be willfully obstinate, but i truly fail to see the educational value in such things. Surely a few days with an inspired teacher/prof would bring all the horror quickly to life.

As to those RenFairs in New England: yeah, but I still don't get it. As a native New Englander I find it all very creepy, personally.

Finally: I do not now or ever have understood the psychology behind battle recreation. At the very least it seems to invoke nostalgia for mass murder.

Why do people enjoy it? Because when no one is actually going to die, be seriously injured or experience other serious negative effects, war is FUN!!!! :biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1:

I usually think of reenactments as being living history events. It doesn't have to be on the same land that the actual battle took place although it definitely helps except of course if there are now a bunch of condominiums and high rises on the edges of the battlefield.:biggrin1: The reenactments help us know how it felt and hopefully get us interested in our past enough to try to make sure the same things don't happen again.

I did the Civil War one as a favor to a friend but it lost reality when a goodyear blimp slowly passed above us.
