Why would i go to a female urologist if i could choose a man?

I think a man would much better understand my sexual issues and in addition, being nude in front of a woman would make me feel quite uncomfortable and vulnerable when talking about manhood issues. How about you?

Why not. Regardless of gender if they told me something radical I would seek a second opinion. I am more concerned with a doctors age/experience level than their gender.

Most of the doctors I have seen have been general practitioners male and female. Equal numbers have seen my plumbing and only one gender has frequently decided to discuss the merits of circumcision with me. Hint it was the ones I usually seen in the Men's room.

Female perspective:
Women go to male gynecologist all the time. I've never once considered the gender (or sexual orientation for that matter) of my doctor, dentist, nurse, etc. They are professionals and as long as they provide me with the expected level of care, that is all I'm concerned with.

I've had Male ob/gyn doctors perform every function to my lady parts. I've discussed everything from sore nipples, yeast infections, weight gain, menopause and everything in between with my Dr. I always saw him as a professional, yet at the same time, I cried with him when he lost his son in an accident, and celebrated his daughter's wedding. Till the day he died, he was the best female Dr around. I choose drs based on their reputation.

Why wouldn't you go to the very best doctor?

Your comments however are thought provoking and interesting. I suppose many people have problems dealing professionally with the opposite sex when it comes to personal issues.

I'd love to hear what more men have to say on this subject.

I have had bad experiences with male gynecologists. One chastised me, at age 24 for having 4 or 5 partners in six months. One opened the speculum too fast and wiped my cervix too hard. So uncomfortable. Naw, I only see female lady-docs now. I haven't had those problems since. I could certainly understand if a man wanted a male urologists.

Yes, I would go to a female urologist. My experience with female doctors (apart from one) has been better than with male. Perhaps because I'm gay I tend to feel more self-conscious naked in front of a man, but that's not the issue. Generally, I've found female doctors more knowledgeable and conscientious, better listeners, more diagnostic, less ego-driven than their male counterparts, i.e. better doctors. Of course, that's broad brush and maybe wrong, but that has been my experience.

I've been seeing my male urologist regularly for the last six years because of a few problems I've detailed elsewhere and on my blog, but wouldn't hesitate to change to a female doctor if I thought the care would be better.

My GP for nearly twenty years was a woman, and my annual physical was actually very casual for both of us. It wasn't until the practice changed hands and the new senior doctor - also a woman - began making changes which impacted my care that I changed to a male doctor. Old school guy, which - being 58 myself - I like. Not because of his gender, but because of his approach.

(Interesting side note: last year he had a family emergency on the day I was to get my physical, and his PA filled in. She's in her twenties and is very much the "read the blood test results" school. At no point was there a genital or hernia check, despite my record of hernias and a chronic pain in my lower left quadrant. This year he was the person who conducted the physical, and had me drop the underwear fairly early in the exam, and I stayed nude for the second half. He checked my penis and testicles thoroughly, did a hernia check and then the prostate. Very matter of fact, but thorough. He even warned me about sunscreen when he noted the left/right tanline on Lil Rambler.)

I'd have no hesitation to switch to any doctor of any gender if they are good, competent practitioners.

Glad to read that - however, my wife never in her life would go to a male doc. but she definitely chooses the best female doc (or massage, physio etc.) around...... but no man ever ever haha... interesting how we all see this so differently!

I have never considered gender when choosing a doctor. So yes, I would.

Having examination of sexual health are always somewhat uncomfortable. It necessarily means to be open and honest and therefore vulnerable in front of a stranger. But for me that would be to the same amount regardless of the doctors gender.

I think choosing the best doctor is the logical choose, but the doctor can only be as good as the information one provides allows.

So if one does feel more comfortable with a doctor of a certain gender and therefore is able to be more forthcoming. Has a lower Inhibitions to actually consult the doctor and get an examination, then it is wise to consider that.

I have a small grape size lump in my scrotum, I had an appointment with the VA. I saw a very young and attractive female dr. She was very professional and thorough.

I would see a female Physician of any specialty as long as I feel they are qualified and have good references of patients. I am not fussy about gender of Physicians. Many of the GP Physicians I have seen over the past 20 or so years have been female.

I have had male and female Urologists and neither sex has even mentioned circumcision to me. I did ask one about it and he said, "oh, you don't want that". It is easier to discuss personal things with a male. My main Dr. is a female and I love her to death.

Personally I would like to have an uncut urologist but it’s not like you can screen a doctor in that way.

I suppose I’d have to make assumptions and get one that is not from the United States originally.
