there's one local store here that has a huge locker room type area as the fitting room...only a curtain separates it from the rest of the store...

that's fine with me, but i'm not sharing a regular fitting room with anyone...

I'd have no problem trying on clothes with strangers in a locker room sized fitting room, but I wouldn't want to share a small fitting room with anyone. But if someone was really pressed for time and asked if they could cut in front of me in the fitting room line I'd say yes, as long as I wasn't in a total hurry myself.

As a child I was forced to use the fitting room at Alexander's, which was just one large room with mirrors. I was uncomfortable with my adolescent body, and would literally lose sleep over the ide of clothing shopping as a result. Even now that I am a confident adult, comfortable in my own skin and a nudist, I don't like to be seen by strangers when I am in my underwear. Nude, sure. Undies? Hell NO! So I'd never consent to use a fitting room with a stranger, and I refuse to shop in places which do not have individual stalls. Privacy, please.

The Discount Store SYMS used to have an open changing room like this. A Large room, with a bench on the perimeter, and lined with mirrors. Always guys in there changing in and out of the suits they sold. And with all the mirrors... no matter where you are you could see what was in the other corner of the room.

I was doing some clothing shopping today and wanted to fit on two tops & a board shorts. The Q at the fitting room was a little long & i was pressed for time. I saw a few guys in the front of the Q and was tempted to ask if we could share a fitting room as i am running late. I did not have the courage & just dropped the clothes and left. I just want to find out would you share a fitting room with stranger honestly ? & Should Fitting rooms be changed to a more of a locker room type for guys & girls seperate.
Not sure what the OP means by locker room style fitting rooms. As for asking to share a standard fitting room with a stranger, because you're in a hurry. HELL NO! That is totally inappropriate! :irked:

Next time set aside a day or at least 3 hours for shopping, the way women do. That way you can relax and enjoy the shopping experience. Maybe get a bite to eat or go for a facial and manicure.

I like a nice roomy stall, with a 3-sided mirror and a padded bench upon which to sit. Anything else just seems barbaric to me.

That said, I too have shopped at Sym's (Where an educated consumer is our best customer) and Loehmann's where the giant mirrored cube with hooks was the norm. Never liked trying on clothes in those places. It's not just that I am uncomfortable having strangers look at me in my underwear. I don't want to see the zaftig, anorexic, sagging, and misshapen masses of humanity in their undies either. :yuck: :puke:

We shopped at Alexander's all the time when I was a kid in Jersey. Yet I have no recollection of a communal dressing room. It must have been so horrible I blocked it out. :frown1:

:yikes: Just a curtain between it and the huddled masses?!?!?! I would never shop there!

I was about to say ditto or agreed; but and this is a big BUT. There are still times when shopping with my mom that we will share a regular sized fitting room. This usually occurs because one of us was trying on clothes and the other waiting/browsing in the store and found something we liked and wanted to try on. But either the empty fitting rooms were locked or there was a line and we opted to share a room to expedite the process. My mom is the only one with whom I will do this. :yup:
It still annoys me though, because mom is apt to make comments like:
  • "Are your boobs getting bigger?"
  • "I think you've gained weight?" This will be said while patting my belly.
  • "Are you sure you don't want the next size up?"
  • "I'm surprised that fits so nicely. I thought you needed an XL for your butt."
Would you share a fitting room with a stranger? No. I like putting on my clothes alone.
BINGO!!

I've been in some stores that just have a big open changing room. Doesn't bother me.
That's because you like to show off your magnificent physique.

I wouldn't have a problem with it at all, but I would want him to be around my age. Not sexual or anything, I'd just draw the line at someone outside my age group.

A place in Rochester used to have open changing rooms and I've used them before. It's not bad... everyone minds his own business anyway.

SYMS in PA still have this setup. IT is a large open room, mirrors all around, and just a curtain for a door. Usually there is no one using it unless they are trying on a suit or something.

Also, several years ago I remember trying on clothes at Hollister Clothing an they just had a large open (dimly lit) room to try clothes on.

SYMS in White Plains has a communal fitting room. I think there is even a tailor who is stationed in there.

There is a new SYMS opening up a few blocks away from me in the city. I wonder what style of dressing rooms they will put in...

Several guys beat me to mentioning Syms. Haven't been to one of Cy's and (was it Marcie's?) stores in years, but the mirror-lined locker room description matches what I used to see in their DC area stores. I never saw any guy trying on bathing suits, boxers, or anything else that would be significantly revealing. So what's the big deal? I agree, though, that packing a couple of strangers into one of those standard little rooms would be a bit too cozy.

I think that Sym's does it to make their stores seem as 'bargain' and 'no-frills' as possible to make you think you're getting a really good deal on a not-so-hot not really designer suit...
