WTF! Female Circumcision, Rite of Passage Or Violation of Rights?

I wouldn't blame you for yielding to the temptation to pull the trigger. It would be exceedingly difficult to hear someone screaming in extreme pain without reacting like that. It's discouraging to know that a culture or society can be so sick as to tolerate such things. Unfortunately, such reactions, though they may help one person, are not enough to end the practice.

Just making sure you know that I got you covered if need be.

Even though Drifter disagrees with me I got him covered also.

Yeah, many young girls die from this. I've read many books about people that have survived the hardships in places like Sudan, and they have had many friends and sisters, etc. die from bleeding to death or from the pain of such an ordeal.

Also, in some cultures, not only do they cut out the clitoris, but they actually sew up the vagina and only leave a tiny hole to urinate through. This is so that their husband knows they are 'pure' when he has sex with her on their wedding night. Could you imagine this type of pain of being split open? Then the husband hangs the bloody sheets out for all to see so they can cheer him for his achievement.... Makes me sick. [apologies if someone already talked about this, didn't read the entire thread]

And more! People have become more and more imaginative when it comes to FGM!
And that`s the term I like to use, it`s MUTILATION!

There was a story about this on NPR this morning - an interview with an Egyptian-American woman that was very difficult to listen to in parts. Her older sister had nearly died from blood loss with FGM at the age of 7 and that ended it in that family, but it continues to be incredibly prevalent in Egypt.

I'm also for respect of other cultures, but this particular practice is just barbaric and beyond reprehensible.

Also, that form of FGM can cause a woman to have constant problems with infections. If they survive the procedure, they are more likely to die or contract further injury during childbirth, and the infant is more likely to die.

It's amazing that such a horrible procedure has been occurring for many centuries. On the other hand, female foot binding in China also survived for centuries.

From a link to a UN agency, it appears that the UN has an effective program to end the practice, but it will take some time. Unfortunately, it's not so simple as passing laws to end it.

At least the near-death experience in one family ended the practice in that family. I suspect that many families would have continued it anyway.

I am totally not comparing the barbarity of female circumcision with that of male circumcision.

However… I find it alarming that people are shocked and appalled at female circumcision, yet think male circumcision is just a "snip snip."

They're both mutilation, they're both fucking WRONG, and both need to be banned.

I don't have any respect for religion either, so any religious argument doesn't hold water in my eyes

Since you have no respect for religion, I assume that you reject the Christian admonition to love one's neighbor as one's self as bogus. One would think that that admonition would make it inescapably clear that FGM is wrong, along with bearing false witness, murder, etc.

The main problem is that people who are supposedly committed to religion often fail to follow the rules which would make life better for everyone but instead quote rules of questionable validity which were part of an ancient culture which has some values we would not accept.

I don't think the practice has its roots in modern religions. People who attack the practice as Islamic cause further problems for its eradication. I think it existed in areas which subsequently converted to Islam and the practice continued much as youfind many re-christian practices surviving. You won't find anyting in the Koran about female circumcision of any type let alone genital mutilation.

Another of the problems is the secrecy and taboo nature in these and most cultures with anything to do with women's genitals.

Interesting, the infant is more likely to die after being born from a woman who's had her genitals mutilated, but part of the superstitions that sustain the practice is that if an infant touches the clitoris durning delivery, chances are great that he or she will be stillborn. Hmmm.

I thought the belief was that if an adult man's penis touched a clitoris it would fall off. The penis, not the clitoris.

Maybe that, too. However, one of the rationales for it is the stated that the baby would be stillborn. Which is one reason for actually performing mutilations on pregnant women.

This is true. It was in the tradition of some people way before islam. The only thing islam "did", and by all means it wasn`t the religion`s fault, but was ONLY the fault of people who used islam in that horrible way, was to spread the idea all over the world. Islam connects millions and millions of people, and some time ago I have read an article about a woman who was mutilated this way in Sandzak, a part of Serbia with mostly muslim population. The case was isolated and condemned by muslims in Serbia.
