This totally cracks me up. Yes the woman has an eating disorder. Thats a given. The Spice Girls were HUGE and Mega popular in England and here as well. The Spice Girls Reunion was HUGE here in the states a few months ago when they got back together for a few performances. ANYWAY...pre spice girls she was a pretty big model in England as well. Granted she's no Kate moss.. but thats a different lvl of model..
All that aside...all the interviews and such that she's been doing, show her to be a pretty nice woman and mother. *and she was cool on the finale of Project Runway this past season too.* I guess what I'm trying to say is she's a Hollywood name and fashion icon. People are going to hate her or love her. And for what it's worth, bad press and good press are still getting her attention and keeping her name in the public eye. *as well as this flaming thread*...
1. Her eating disorder is hardly what is annoying about her. I know plenty of people with eating disorders...my sister has an eating disorder, so does my mother, so did god knows how many of my girlfriends...women having eating disorders is not a new thing in our culture, and it is unfortunate.
That is hardly my gripe with her. I feel badly if she has an eating disorder...but how much of it is a disorder, since she was fine all the way up to the late 90s, and looked healthy, and how much is her own vanity, thinking she is a model, tanning herself to ridiculous proportions, starving herself to be a fashion model size zzero andt hen getting bolt on tits?
An eating disorder is one thing...deliberately doing what she has done is far different.
If she had an eating disorder and was seeking help, more power to her...but she is not doing that...she is trying to be "fashionable" and ultra-thin, of her own making.
2. The Spice Girls were a "huge" and ridiculous anomaly, much like Hanson or the BackStreet Boys, based on marketing to kids, not based on talent.
3. Pre-Spice Girls she was not a huge model...she was a nobody. She answered an ad in the paper to audition for the spice girls, like all the rest.
4.
"all the interviews and such that she's been doing, show her to be a pretty nice woman and mother."
Yeah...you can tell all that from an interview? Joan Crawford seemed nice in interviews too. An interview tells you nothing about a person. How they behave and act is a much better indication.
5. She is not a "hollywood name" she is a celebrity. As for her being a "fashion icon"...that is highly debatable. When people think of fashion...she is hardly the first name they think of.
They think of known designers, then models, then some actresses perhaps.
I would hardly grant her "Iconic" status. the most relevant definitions of "icon" are
- An important and enduring symbol
- One who is the object of great attention and devotion
Can't say she falls under "Icon" in terms of fashion under those definitions. She may at times be the object of great attention...but hardly "devotion".
If you are going to say Fashion Icon, then relate it to someone who truly is, like Karl Lagerfeld, or Valentino, or Giorgio Armani etc. or other folks who are truly symbolic of fashion.
When you say "fashion", Victoria BEckham is not the first name on anyone's lips...except maybe her own
