I am just trying to get the pulse of the forum here. My physicals are pretty irregular because my health insurance is pretty on and off, and I generally feel pretty healthy.
I have noticed over the years of my adult life that that genital exams have gone from somewhat thorough to a flash in the pan. Now, this could be that I have just switched doctors quite a few times, but part of me believes that less emphasis is now being placed on the physical exam, in favor of just dialogue and questionnaires.
My most recent physical was really frustrating. The doctor came in, I was really impressed initially because he seemed so open in his approach and conversation. However, there was almost no physical examination whatsoever. I think the nurse did the normal routine check-ups, but the doctor himself briefly made an appearance, discussed a few concerns I had, but did not check any reflexes, ear/nose/throat stuff, heartbeat, etc. He most certainly did not genital exam.
This was really disappointing to me specifically because of how rare I actually get physicals. What was the point of me even going (and having bloodwork done that I didn't realize my insurance didn't cover leaving me with a $100 bill).
I remember going to a doctor in college, just for a routine check up. He had be completely undress and get on the table. He did a really thorough examination of my entire body; including an extensive examination of my penis and balls, to which I got very hard but he didn't seem to mind at all.
Curious who else has noticed this trend away from physical examination, or am I just seeing the wrong doctors? Please share any recent experiences you've had with genital and prostate exams also.
