I have been burned so many times going to restaurants with good yelp reviews only to experience that the place is way over rated.

I really don't understand this phenomenon of bad places getting such good reviews. The only thing I can think of is that adage that if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all, so only the glowing reviews of places make it on their site.

Has anyone else have this problem with Yelp?

I think their reviews are shit. The format makes it easy to believe reviews and ratings but what it actually comes down to is taking the advice of people you don't know or wouldn't trust in real life. Or basically dumb teenagers who have very limited and specific horrible tastes.

I have a feeling that most of the reviews especially on some mediocre places with 4 stars are made by either the restaurant owners or their friends to prop up a lousy place - which makes the whole site basically useless and tragically flawed.

I am just beginning to understand the way Yelp works now, unfortunately.:frown1:

I think the site sucks big time and very unreliable.

I use Yelp all the time but you have to read between the lines sometimes. Resturants (tastes) are a bit subjective so I pay more attention parking, service, parking and such...

Just like at Amazon.com, the reviews ARE sometimes fake. What I do is check the review history of reviewers that give glowing reviews. If the reviewer doesn't have an extensive review-history, I shit-can the review.

That's a good practice. I always do that for product reviews on sites like Amazon.

I have used Yelp a few times and found it to be fairly accurate, but I agree with the OP that there seems to be a lack of mediocre or negative comments.

I've had a Yelp account for several years but deleted the few posts I had and rarely logged on due to lack of interest.

Which brings me to my next point..

I recently stayed at a hotel which I had a curiosity about but ended up not being particularly impressed with. Had I paid more attention to Yelp reviews, I would have been given more insight.

For the last three weeks I've enjoyed reading/writing Yelp reviews. It's also fun to see that I've had exactly 100 views of my reviews during this time. I don't review every business I've recently been to but instead selectively pick and choose places to make for an interesting personal profile :).

Haven't really had any bad experiences with well reviewed ratings on Yelp.

I've certainly been to some that were overrated, but they weren't bad, just not necessarily as good as the reviews suggested.

On the flip side though, I've also been to some flat out amazing restaurants that I never would've known about if not for Yelp.

So on the whole, it's been a useful tool.

I gave up on Yelp a while back. I was missing so many good restaurants that weren't even listed! And these were apparently popular places, so I kind of figured the fix was in.

It's Cyrus, and don't forget it! Nah, I'm more into Zydeco and Swamp Pop nowadays. Those Cajuns converted me!

You should Google it! I don't think I could handle hearing someone say Zydeco in an Aussie accent! Sensory overload!

I need to be careful, otherwise I will be accused of off thread commentary :)

It never happens here, so I will go back to the original OP...

I don't believe in reviews of any kind. Not even of the movies. Because if I did, I would not have come to LPSG.

Just lately, I have noticed that in several journalists views, they rate and publish that a place is well liked or not by the amount of times someone, or people click a key.

Is that how it has become? How many likes there are on a social network page, how we are to judge another?

I find this is a dangerous precedent. Perhaps it is not just me who recognises this.
