when talking to people from the USA there are quite a few food items you have that sound absolutely disgusting to me, chimmychungas (if that's how it's spelled), tater tots, grits, chitlings - what do we in the uk eat that you think sounds foul. We have our popcorn with sugar on, peanut butter with jam makes me feel pukey, what do we eat that's vomit inducing in your eyes?

The one that always gets brought up to me in the states is black pudding! You eat congealed blood? Really?!

When I went to OZ, I ordered a burger. On the burger they put this disgusting sauce, beats, and fried eggs. I couldn't finish it because it was so disgusting.

But on the flipside, the Aussies thought we Yanks were nuts for making peanut butter and banana sandwiches. MMM. Those are so good. I used to eat those when I was a kid.

I think it's chimichangas. They're good. So are tater tots and grits. I will not eat chitlings though - yecch!

Peanut butter with jam is good too! (like our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - I practically lived on those for a while because I was poor...)

I cracked up when I first heard of spotted dick. I was at a festival and they had a booth selling UK foods, and there were cans of spotted dick there. I turned to my friend and said "Don't they have medication for that?" (and of course, I bought a can...)

I love bubble and squeak! I love bangers and mash, too!

Never heard of toad in a hole.

Grits is ground hominy. Hominy is a corn kernel with the hull removed. Unseasoned, it's rather bland.

There are some characteristically American food items which aren't familiar to all Americans; not too surprising, considering the size of the place. For instance, we don't have catfish restaurants here in New England, but in some parts of the country you can't swing a cat without hitting at least one.

Mainly the problem with the English/American food dichotomy is terminology. We realize that hamburger has no ham in it, but that doesn't bother us unduly. On the other hand, whatever a banger is, it doesn't sound edible. And here crisps would be anything cooked until it's burned to both unrecognizability and indigestibility.

Other terminology involves the food-related. We really don't mind putting napkins on the dinner table.

The food itself isn't too exotic or weird, the only real exception perhaps being haggis.

The phrase "English cooking" is here in the US a byword for brutality, particularly the horrible fate inflicted on boiled vegetables. I know it's not so bad, actually; I never had any problem with the food in England. Except for that haggis business.

Chitlin's or properly spelled chitterlings, are pigs intestines. They are a seasonal favorite in the South Eastern US and with black people nationwide. Mom and I love them but my dad can't stand them. :biggrin1:

Yeah, haggis is another one I won't try.

I live in an area where there are a lot of catfish places. Lots of barbecue places too, and Mexican restaurants. I like all that stuff so I'm not complaining!

Eel is OK - spotted dick is fucking gorgeous - at least mine is. Steak and kidney pie is the nectar of the fucking GODS when done right. You would weep for my grandmother's 'Snake n Pygmy' as we like to call it.

Black pudding is heavenly - as is white pudding.

And before anyone asks - yes - I do eat horsemeat here in France - it is delicious. Neigh! No, really.
