Women:
  1. Stockard Channing (The best! Very under-rated)
  2. Mariska Hargitay (Honestly, she helped impoved the quality of T.V, alone)
  3. Barbara Stanwyck (Double Indemnity is perhaps the best movie made)
  4. Neve Campbell (My all-time favorite actress, she should be #1)
  5. Mink Stole
  6. Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind is simply awesome)
Men:

  1. Russell Crowe (All kindsa' awesome)
  2. Don Cheadle
  3. Fred MacMurray
  4. Sidney Poitier
  5. Edward Norton (The Illusionist, 'sall I'm sayin')
  6. Jake Gyllenhaal

What's obvious from reading (and making up) lists is that people always get left out. In making mine, I pretty much took names off the top of my head of actors/actresses I've seen in recent films (meaning over the last 5 years or so).

Even still I'm sure I've forgotten a number of those who I regularly enjoy seeing in films (for example, recent films of Pierce Brosnan or Jaimie Foxx for that matter).

As for older films (and their actors), I almost never watch them. Guess I'm not "into" retro or nostalgia (probably because for guys my age they aren't "nostalgia"...they're old films...funny how that works).

Had I decided to include those in my list I guess I'd still be writing names (someone finally mentioned Poitier for example... and one might add Forest Whitaker, or Brock Peters or Henry Fonda for that matter. Hell, I get a kick out of seeing Fred Williamson every now and then).

I guess for every one we think of naming, there must be a dozen more we forget to.

Hjalmar,
Yes, I forgot about Bjork. She was magnetic in Dancers.

Also forgot Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote.

And Denzel in Training Day. He carries that film by sheer force of personality.

Great list ....
Now I am going to have to go back and do some more additions not subtractions. I was overwhelmed by the question frankly....
