Well, I think some conservatives are trying to protect such colleges, among others.

The question of specifically religious institutions--colleges, churches, etc.--does complicate the issue. But the bill is much more sweeping than that in its scope.

Here is the way I see this

After you cut through all the bullshit about "freedom of speech" and the "religious liberty" crapola it just comes down to a certain group of people saying "we still want to "be able to discriminate" ""

For this certain group if was legal for the best part of 100 years due to "Jim Crowe type laws" and even though most of those laws were overturned or otherwise done away with by the 70's for another 20 or 30 years they could still discriminate because it was "public opinion" and "how things were" especially in the places that had had those Jim Crowe laws was such that they could. Blacks "knew their place" and stayed in it. Women were fine with or at least tolerated living in a "mad men world" Gays stayed in the closet and quiet and did not dane to ask for any of the rights that "normal people had"

Now all that has changed and they still want to discriminate and are pissed off to no end that they can not and want to find some way that will allow them to do it.

Nothing more than that.
