Dont be so narrow minded! Many great singers could be defined as pop; Diana Ross, whitney etc.

Anyone who underestimates Madonnas status is an idiot; she will go down in history as the greatest female entertainer ever. Not for her voice, but for the sheer force of personality & influence. No-one comes close when u take time to think about it. The sales stats back her up too, even though she may not be the actual biggest seller(not sure).

there are alot of great singers mentioned by others here but there are also alot of performers who sing who don't compare. i don't hate them or anything it's just that if singing is the criteria then madonna and diana ross and britney just don't have the goods. they are performers, great ones, but not great singers. there are singers who have been chosen to present the best songs of the best songwriters in history. madonna is not one of them, gertrude lawrence is. to be honest marnie nixon should be on some of these lists. the problem is anyone under the age of 35 would never know who these people are.

The term "great singer" is totally subjective! Stop trying to own it. There probably isn't a singer on the planet who is liked by 100% of people.

Yma Sumac's albums have been re issued on DVD--since the material is scanty, there are two double CD's. I had heard there was a live set of hers, but haven't tracked it down. Maybe I should just check Amazon.

i'm not the one who came up with the word "great" as the criteria of these lists. most of the lists are someone's "favorite" singers. two different things.

I rechecked: there are a number of re issues and some with previously un issued tracks. (no DVD's--mental typo)
She's not suited to be universal. And her singing in Native South American is not a draw.
