Faculty member calling me this morning: "Hello, Mr. NCbear." [He's very formal because he's from a rather formal culture in Africa.] "I need to know how to submit a 50-page NIH application due Monday. It's not quite finished."

WTF?? Usually, people give us at least five days' warning, because the whole institution knows it's both necessary and our policy. And what does he mean, It's not quite finished??

"Oh, and I need help writing it."

DOUBLE WTF. He eventually said he had a $500K idea that he'd been toying with writing down for a while; I eventually said most people with $500K ideas who've never submitted a grant application before take 3-6 months to create their proposals. [I was trying to be gentle. Proposal development can take up to a year, or even longer.]

He may have gotten the picture: "Oh, so you don't think it would be a good idea to try to meet the Monday deadline?"

[NO, I thought very loudly in his general direction. There was a long pause.] "Have you talked with your chairperson and dean?"

"No, why?"

TRIPLE WTF. [Because they have to approve your submitting the application, dumbass. In most universities, your time is not yours to direct. It's your supervisor's responsibility to direct you as to what you can/should be doing. If I have to scramble to meet a deadline, I want to know that your chairperson and dean approve of what you're doing.]

End result: I had to place two quick phone calls--to his chairperson and dean, of course--to make him back off from his "gotta get it out Monday" mentality. So now he's pissed because I didn't move heaven and earth to help him write his grant proposal and create his budget for him within the next three business days (my office is currently helping one center director with a $1.7 million proposal, another with a $2 million proposal, and two faculty members with a third $750K proposal--all three due within the next seven business days, all three to be submitted to Federal agencies, and all three on the chancellor's radar screen).

What a WTFer. I found it extremely difficult even to be minimally civil to the man.
