so today I had a really bad day. i was one hour late for work because somehow my clock got disconnected, I couldn't find my work Id so it took forever to get into my office. A handful of people were mia so I had to cover some positions. The. I leave my car and house keys in the train and believe me it wasn't the end. I won't go into detail but it's been an awful day.

My question here is how to relax in a situation like this?

I empathize...

Sorry you had a bad day - we all have them.

Do yogic breathing. Will help to change your mood and see the silliness in being angry and resentful.

Tomorrow will be much brighter.

I get on the phone with a friend. My friends are irreverent geeks. First they listen. Then they point out anything I should have dine differently of I've not already copped to it. Next they tell me some horror story of someone else's for perspective and relief. All of this is sprinkled with outrageous jokes. I feel better, take a hot shower or soak in a tub with lavender or eucalyptus and Epsom salt. Have some tequila, or wine, or a quick visit with Miss Mary Jane. Laugh at you tube and Facebook. Indulge in my guilty pleasure: binging on "Murder, She Wrote". Who can stay upset watching Angela Lansbury, or listening to those New England accents? Not I. You do your version, and get a good night's sleep. Have a nice tomorrow.

I'm sorry for your bad day. Hope that you have nowhere to go but up from here.

When my day gets to me I get a bottle of wine and call my best friend to cry on her shoulder. Of course she tells me to get real, quit my bellyaching, grow a pair and put on my big girl panties. She's so sympathetic. Not.

She'll tell me that I'm married to a wonderful guy, have a successful business and live the dream. And that makes me feel worse for feeling bad in the first place! I hate her.

When I was working I often took solace in a baseball game - either on tv, but even better in person. That may not work for you but I did that for years. Of course it was harder when the season was over. Still the basic idea would be to get mentally lost in something like a sporting event, music, a movie or something like that. I liked things I could do alone because if I met up with someone it would usually end up with mutual bitching about our respective bad days and that just drove the salt a little deeper. I liked being alone and distracted in situations like you describe just so my mind could unwind and sort things out slowly for an hour or two.

I tend to stream a lot on Netflix or Amazon Prime when I want to distract myself, that has worked out pretty well. Good luck - I also hold onto the thought that these things do pass and tomorrow is another day.

Let me expand a little bit here - A long time ago when I was in college and working in real estate I took a lot of course work for advanced certifications and came across a guy who was working in the field of stress management. He was like the Gordon Gekko of stress. "Stress is good, stress motivates you to improve tour life, stress drives you to produce, to accomplish goals, etc." He also believed you had to control stress and to do that you had to take time to let your mind wander and clear itself out. This is why a ballgame or an activity where you could be more passive and focused on something other than your daily potholes and problems. The result was you mind, in unravelling itself often allowed you to find a fresh way of seeing a problem anew if you were not focused on it mentally seeing everything the same was all day.

A relaxed mind is also a high functioning mind.

Thanks everyone so just a little update.... Found my Keyes.... I actually left them on my office desk at work, my managers told me to mday that they were impressed with my ability to finish not just my work but that of someone else's so they told me to expect something good soon.

Funny how life works. I'm sure there was a lesson in yesterday.

This made me smile. Thanks for the update. Glad your clouds all had silver linings.

Glad it turned out ok.

I usually turn my bad days into epic emails or FB posts telling the saga of THE WORST DAY EVER! And I exaggerate everything to hilarious extremes until I just laugh at the ridiculousness of everything. Essentially, if no one died, it's all ok.

And on the plus side, my 'Adventures at Sketchy Hotels' series has become a must read around the office.
