Are Guys More Comfortable Naked In The Locker Room Than They Used To Be?

At our gym we all hang around naked in the locker room, towels optional. Hardly anyone bothers.

We have a waist height table where you can place your genitalia and sort of stroke it like it's a new little puppy or kitten you are showing off to your friends. And it's good for grooming.

We also put charts around the walls tracking links between penis length, salary, and body building / slimming / fitness progress. ( The data points shown with our names and pictures in case people don't know each other by name ). VO2 max versus testicle size is my favourite...

Not everything in the above contribution is literally true. I'm sort of making a point, I guess ...

I've noticed that newer gym facilities, rec centers, sports arenas are phasing out the community showers. Private shower stalls and closed doors are a new norm, at least for me. I do come across the old community shower facilities when I'm travelling cross country. Makes no difference to me.

I'm 27 and I will admit in my early 20's I was king of the towel dance but honestly since being on this sight (under other names) for years I started to get more and more comfortable being naked in the lockerroom.

I'm in my 40s and never saw the towel dance until the past 10 years. Mostly younger guys doing it, except one guy in his 40s at my gym who takes all his clothes and changes in the shower.

Back in the day, we had group showers in the dorm. We were naked and thought nothing of it.

Agree with the previous. The younger guys seem almost paranoid these days. Entering into the locker room feels like entering into a paranoid area. It's us older guys who are comfortable… and my own comfort makes me feel like I make them uncomfortable. It's like I feel obligated to also be paranoid.

I know some guys think it's the older generation that needs to help the younger generation be more comfortable, but that doesn't work. I don't know why the younger guys are so paranoid, and I don't know what could help them.
They were raised by single mothers and uptight Republicans.

sometimes it's easier to shower at home instead of carting all the products around.......being naked in the locker room is not an issue with me

Ironically, I think it is just the opposite. The reason we have the uptight society that we have today is because of ultra-liberal parents. You know, the ones who won't let their child do anything they don't want to do.

The reason kids don't shower any longer at school was because some wimpy kid who was shy didn't want to shower, and the parents sued the school district with the backing of the ACLU. So school systems stopped forcing kids to do it, because heaven forbid a kid be forced to do anything they don't want to.

The conservative / republicans, ironically, would rather force kids to shower and "be a man."

There may be some reality there. Showering was mandatory for my generation. I didn't like it; was scared to death at first… then got over it; and today it's no big deal for me. In today's world it sounds unthinkable for communal showering to be mandatory. The Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas case in the early 90s made "sexual harassment" a major concern for everyone, inevitably putting an end to mandatory showering.… hard to believe there was a day when it was mandatory for males to not only shower but also SWIM nude (seriously, the YMCA and other facilities used to require men to swim nude).

Im 21 and have never really had a problem being naked in locker rooms. I think I first went to the Y at like 12ish or so but it didnt bother me. Being raised by single mothers though does have an effect, but really I dont notice who's doing what in the locker room and could care less how someone gets dressed. Not to mention I've known I was "blessed" at a young age and have a bit of an ego.

It's not like I care whether others get nude either. It's just that I get a feeling like I should be obligated to be uncomfortable… the younger generation ( 18 through 30) acts like us older guys get off on nudity in the locker room. Truth is, I hardly notice it … until I get a sense that someone is uncomfortable with it, and then I get all awkward.

Yep, single-mother households can definitely be a factor on this, as these kids don't grow up with a father figure to show boys that being naked is not a bad thing. Obviously, their mothers will dress and shower in privacy, and they simply pick that up that one must dress always dress and shower in privacy. I remember as a child showering with my Father and changing with him frequently...nothing sexual about this at all. It was merely expedient, as we had only one bathroom! Mom and my sister were usually next, after waiting a few minutes for the water heater to recover

Or it could be as simple as men don't like being ogled by other men.

There's definitely some truth to this. I have no problem being naked if everyone is minding their own business...but get super uncomfortable if there's some dude leering at me. A discreet glance or two is fine, but I'm not a piece of meat, and I'm there in the locker room to change and shower only.

I agree with jockmaestro! And even if you are not interested in being adventurous, why do you apparently find it demeaning to discover that you are so attractive that guys just can't keep their eyes off of you?
