Reality TV is messy and manipulative. So, I do somewhat question that clip. However, the way he built it up seemed like a “coming out” moment. If he really is gonna say that’s just his brother/friend then both he and VH1 would have indulged some serious baiting.
However, I don’t quite think that’s the case. I believe he hinted at queerness in an interview years ago. While both he and his “brother” give off vibes. And it’s rather stereotypical for queer males to mess around with older women or more butch women.
If he is revealing a bf then good on him to do it so unabashedly and seemingly without shame and without waiting many years. That can be difficult for “passing” black men, especially ones who have dimensions or fluidity.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see an incredibly tacky and exploitative network like VH1 do some sh*t like that though. If that’s really his “brother”/friend, there’s literally no need for a build-up and cliffhanger. They knew exactly how that moment would be perceived. While August would be nonsensical, because there’s nothing “out there” or “wrong” about basic male friendship or support. If the network was “just playin’ August needs to speak out against such overt gay baiting and queer sensationalism.

Like I said, they both give off that energy. And I have no doubt that’s more than a brother-friend. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if both August and The Surreal Life play into the ambiguity for a while.
