it is technically a catholic pilgrimage, but a lot of people just do it as a personal challenge, to raise money or for a spiritual pilgrimage. It's the "Santiago de Compostela" pilgrimage or "camino de Santiago". There are multiple routes, but it's literally 490 miles if you do the whole thing... it took him like 27 days to walk it.

As a reformed Catholic of Spanish decent, I can tell you a lot of people walk the Camino de Santiago for many reasons, most of them non-religious (sport, challenge, history, etc.).This is very strange thing to be doing?
