mindseye: Yuck. A wooden spoon will make a more resonant bang. Metal on metal is just too clangy for my ears.
A metal spoon against crystal or glass can produce a nice sound, but care must be used. Much more safe is to produce a meldious humming sound by running a moistened finger around the rim of a glass, but that would be 'rimming' instead of 'banging', wouldn't it?
mindseye: What a coincidence -- my grandma was known to play the flute. She and your grandpa would have probably made beautiful music together. I've played the flute a few times myself, but I much prefer just good old-fashioned banging.
I enjoy a periodic trip to the Art Center where I can sit in the audience and enjoy a whole stage full of people fluting, blowing and banging in unison.

I popped down to my local HMV and bought Johann Joseph Fux's "Timpani Symphony No.1" It was OK, but ... well ... there was just too much banging in it! I also listened to some of Giuseppi Orali Cunnilingi's work but I wasn't impressed; I thought it sucked.
