Bravo's Below Deck

They’re actual crew members who get paid by charter guests on top of the few thousand dollars they eventually get from Bravo. The yachting industry is notoriously horny, heavy on service and lite on rules so it’s really not surprising that so many male crew members have done porn or start doing porn after being on television.
Thank you for answering. I know zero about training for yacht crew members as opposed to flight crew that must go through rigorous training, etc. The question in relation to reality TV is that besides knowing that reality TV pays shit when compared to other "televised" productions, I happen to know someone who was hired to be an assistant to a reality TV personality on this person's very own reality show, but when cameras were off the "assistant" was not really an assistant and didn't even live in the same city the show was tapped. So I wondered if they change crew members often on Below Deck and if part of the crew is just there for the show while some other crew members, that maybe not even be on camera at all, do the work behind cameras. It might not make much sense but I guess you understand why I wondered in the first place.

I'm all up for pornstars having the chance to transition into other professions (we all know how porn is not forgiving once the novelty wears off or when a star grows too old for the camera) and if Below Deck stars need an extra source of income, show it off all you want, people! It's not as if I - or anyone else - would complain.

It makes sense. Yachting crews tend to be young, in shape, and willing to work for the large tips they get from guests. The employment is at will and crew members hop from boat to boat around the world. Below Deck is cast from that wide pool so we definitely are seeing people who very likely have never met working together because they look good and make good television. The skill sets and charters are real but they’re baked into a slickly produced tv show.

And this is what strikes me as new and somewhat funny: they're willing to work for large tips and what's funny is that I don't tip flight crew members as I do waiters and luggage carriers. In a way, it's like they're waiters in a boat (I know it goes beyond that and that it's a tough job) and I'd never think to produce a TV show about it (but again: I'm no genius TV producer). It's also very interesting that considering all the talk we hear about work permits, and work visas, etc, they get to work around the world and I can only wonder about the nightmare that must be filing taxes if they work for several companies around the world. Perhaps you gotta DM me so we can continue this convo in private to not disrupt the flow of the actual convo that must take place on this thread. I'm certainly interested about this show now. LOL!

There are actually only a few cast members who have porn, and they all did so after they were on the show, using the notoriety the received from the show as a springboard for their porn.

Some members come on the with a lot of yachting experience under the belt, while others only the two weeks mandatory training prior to coming on the show.

The crew that you see on the show are actually the ones doing the work, however there are a two to three crew members who they introduce in the first episode, (first mate, engineers), but they're only seen on camera when there's a problem.

You are correct, the paid doesn't remotely compare to what actors in prime-time make, but it's not bad pay for they're paid a salary from the ship owners, the tips from the charter members and money from Bravo, so it's about $150,000 for six weeks work, returning members are paid more.

There’s no way the network is paying them enough for them to make $150k total for a yachting season. First season Housewives only get paid $60K and that’s their flagship franchise. Bravo’s giving the Below Deck kids $10K each, max. They wouldn’t be doing porn afterwards if they were making so much.

Thank you, Inthepine. Very elucidating answer.

In a way you sorta confirmed my impressions: though they are real crew members, they are in a way cast for this purpose. And there's also those doing (important) work that are known but not important for the storyline thus completely removed from most episodes.

I guess that once they realize that they now have an audience from TV, going the OF route can be as equilly profitable as 6 weeks on a boat. It's the good old: you do you. I don't blame them. If they are willing to entertain and they have willing paying customers, rock OF all you want and enjoy.

Exactly. The crew you see are mainly to service and interact with the charter guests, but it's also where they get a taste, (for lack of a better word), of showing off their bodies and all the attention and affirmation that goes with it, so I sort of believe that's when the OF comes in.

I don't a horse in that race, so I'm not proselytizing or defending that figure, but it was told to me by a recruiter who works on the show.
