Worse, even without being hacked, the device would lock you in if the battery happens to go dead while you are wearing it. The screws securing the battery cover are on the inside, and are covered by the subs body while it is worn, making replacement impossible.

Further, although the device makes a Bluetooth connection direct to the controlling phone, the phone app apparently cannot work unless it can contact the manufacturer's servers. (This is, in fact, the route by which the hackers were able to take control.) Therefore, it cannot work in a place lacking mobile data service or WiFi, such as an actual dungeon space. The server interaction is done to allow the dom to remotely unlock the sub from anywhere in the world (they both need the app on their phones, and the sub's phone must be in Bluetooth range of his dick.) While this is a nice feature for some, often the real reason manufacturers require operation to pass through their servers is because they have some plan to monetize your personal data, something to consider carefully when the product is a sex toy or other very personal thing.

The article suggests the only way to removed a hacked (or dead battery) device is to completely destroy it, by tearing it open to access the wiring, after which it cannot be reassembled. However, the locking ring is a shitty zinc-alloy casting (a material you really do not want to be wearing on your dick; real chastity hardware is stainless steel, etc.), so it is easily broken with a large pair of wire cutters or similar tool. Presumably, you could obtain a replacement ring to put the device back in use later.

The term "Internet of Things" (IoT) was coined to described devices with such connectivity. Engineers have a different name for these things, which are often ineptly designed, and rip-off customers both financially and privacy-wise, IoS (which is not an Apple operating system):
