I also thought that too but put it down to my advanced years and poor eyesight!
It's the jaw area. He either had something done or the steroid use finally affected his jawline muscles like it happened to Kumail Nianjani and Zac Efron.
Also, he needs to wear more sunscreen. The Australian sun is no joke.

maybe is just his age? jaw muscles can change with age from what I have seen.

He must have had jaw implants or something else done to his jaw. This happened around the time he was announced to star in "Mad Max: Furiosa". He appeared very different and weird-looking in the press conference to announce the film in Sydney. It was during the Covid pandemic, so he must have time to do a procedure before a new film started shooting. Here is a photo with the larger, more square jaw he had at the conference. I miss his old, narrower, natural jaw (the last 4 photos from a press conference for "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019.)

It actually happened before then because it was already present for when he was shooting Thor: Love and Thunder, so it is highly unlikely it was due to steroid use since that would have been a more gradual change and his was overnight. A friend and I speculated at the time that it could have been fillers and we think that might be the case because if you look at when he first debuted the new jawline to how it looks now, now it is much less pronounced (another reason it's probably not steroid use as that damage is pretty much permanent).
So my best guess is that it's ether fillers that he has had at least mostly dissolved so they're not as noticeable anymore as they were or it was implants and the more pronounced look was because of swelling back then. (I'm still leaning towards the fillers theory. They're easier to undo.)
