When I first meet someone's wife or girlfriend I often compliment them on their appearance at the close of our meeting. I was wondering how women on this site feel about how the compliment should be addressed. ie: "you have a lovely wife, girlfriend. or "you are a lovely woman", nice to meet you. Should the compliment be addressed to the man or to the woman? Please help as I do not want to insult anyone. Or am I just being overly cautious?

Safe compliments I would suggest are:

"Wow, so-and-so, you are a lucky man!" said with a laugh and a smile.
or
"Ah, so this is the pretty lady I have been hearing about."

Some guys might take a direct compliment to her as disrespectful. Some cultures don't even allow you to look at her without addressing him first. But, If you are friends with the guy you should be able to judge what is appropiate.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts.

Compliment the woman as a gentleman would, while simultaneously complimenting the man on his taste. Alot of guys would be put off if you take it overboard, or have an undertone that indicates her man is irrelevant:

Ideal: "So THERE is the lovely _____ and her lucky husband!"

Bad Idea: "That dress accentuates your wonderful tits and ass! Oh ya...Hi Bob!"
