I missed these posts from him so much. Very glad he got a break but man, it's great to have something.

Been diving into his catalogue on YouTube now. God he really was sad and alone for so long. And still such an artist. Not sure many pop stars cut themselves this deep for their music.

Definitely listen to I Know A Place if you haven't. It's my favorite (maybe objectively the best) unreleased song of his. He sounds so different lmao and I'd love for him to rerecord it and give it a production update. But you can tell how ridiculously sad he was, and the lyrics are so sad. Especially now knowing everything we know about what he went through growing up.

Oh yeah he was going for that folksy voice that was super popular at the time. Kinda Mumford & Sons.

I must be in a super emotional vibe lately because I'm REALLY affected by these old, early vids. I see a really sad queer kid, perhaps even embarrassed that he's doing these music videos in his room or a field. He sings his heart out, then he sinks again and walks away. The impression I get is that the songs were all the poor thing had.

In his early YouTube videos he always ended with “god bless” he hasn’t really discussed his spirituality since moving to LA.

If the Found Heaven title track is anything to go off of, him growing up religious was a big source of conflict in his life with his identity so that's something I understand. It seems he's come to peace with it though, which is really good to see

I swear to god I'm happy he made it out of his teens. Like, he seems REALLY sad. Scary sad. He's certainly not that sad anymore even if he has his ups and downs.

I think we're reaching a bell curve of explicit queerness in his music if that makes sense? His early songs felt very inspired by Frank Ocean and the subtext was so clearly about yearning for other guys and growing up in a place that didn't allow him to just say that (The King and Greek God come to mind) and now Found Heaven/Wishbone seems to be the most explicit he's been about his relationships with men so far. Not to say the two albums in between that didn't have anything similar, but his earliest and latest are direct about his sexuality in a way I appreciate. I'm happy he's finally allowing himself to to say everything he was afraid to say back then

Just watched Crush Culture now and wow can I see how Lorde influenced him.
I love videos where he talks about his musical influences:

In this one he mentions his biggest as Jeff Buckley, Lorde, Adele and U2. I can definitely hear it all in his music

And he's really made himself into what he is now by himself. Which is especially rare these days where everyone is a nepo baby of some kind. Like he didn't even have some rich family behind him supporting him, he went to LA with his own money. You can see his growth through his youtube channel, and how hard he worked on it so he could accomplish something. Even though he talked about how people in his life growing up said he wouldn't amount to anything. And going from that by himself, to traveling the world, and selling out MSG and the Forum, having soon to be four studio albums, etc etc.

It's really impressive where he is now, despite everything.

just to break up the sappiness a little bit lmaooo
