I'm just showin some love for arguably the best pop group of all time, because for a record 5th time (encouraged by the release of Mama Mia The Movie, ABBA Gold has reached number 1 on the UK Album chart. :biggrin1: It is also the oldest album ever, to get a number 1.
Its ABBA's overall 13th Number one in the UK Album Chart and an achievement worth celebrating. :smile:

A girl I dated in college was in one of the touring companies of Mamma Mia so I saw it when the show was close to me. Man . . . I really hated that show.

But, the music was cool! Had the whole theater rockin'. It really holds up.

Best pop group of all time, though, Dodger?! Well, I'm a Beatles fan so I just can't go there. Unless you think of the lads from Liverpool as rock . . . then I could be with you, bro'! :wink:

ABBA is among the most $ucce$$ful groups of all time. Sweden's horrifying tax system which, at the time, had tax rates over 100% :eek3:, encouraged anyone making a great deal of money to remain cash poor and re-invest any money earned by business. ABBA was shrewdly formed as a corporation at the onset and could, therefore, take profits and re-invest them elsewhere. Once the big money came in, ABBA became the largest holding company for shipping in Sweden. They moved into oil, optics, pharma, and a whole host of other businesses that have made them all far richer than the music alone ever would have made them. Towards the end of their time as a group, ABBA was bigger than Volvo itself. The group has not formally dissolved, but ABBA the corporation, has moved out of Sweden and offshore. Since then, nobody really knows just how much money they all have, but however much it is, they don't need any more, having turned down $1 billion to reform.

Unlike just about every group out there, ABBA didn't squander their millions, later billions, and that planning has made all four of them so rich that they're part of the superrich tax shelter set who pay next to nothing in taxes because all of their wealth is domiciled in tax havens like Jersey, Andorra, the Caymans, Monaco, and Liechtenstein.

I grew up listening to ABBA with my mum and dad in New Zealand. They are are a HUGE part of my life. I simply love their music. I'm glad to hear they moved all their monies offshore and now are a massive corporation. Good for them!:biggrin1:

I think ABBA Gold has never been out of the album chart, since it entered in 1992.

I loved ABBA when I was growing up, but the other kids made fun of me for liking them. My best friend was especially critical. (He liked Styx and would go on and on about why Styx was better than ABBA. However, he did admit to liking "Dancing Queen.")

By the time I was a teenager, I got interested in other music and was embarrassed to admit that I liked ABBA, so I put their albums away. (They were pretty much worn out to the point of being unlistenable, anyway.) Then ABBA Gold came out and a surprising number of people admitted to liking ABBA (some secretly). I actually don't have ABBA Gold; I bought the 4 CD "Thank You for the Music" box set instead.

I find now that I really enjoy some of the songs that I used to skip over as a kid because I thought they were boring, such as "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room," "The Day Before You Came," and "Slipping Through My Fingers." Now I think they are intelligent, subtle, and sophisticated. Other songs took on new meaning from an adult point of view, like "When I Kissed the Teacher," which is both funny and sexy to envision.

Every now and then I come across an unexpected cover of an ABBA song, like when I was in my punk phase in college and I was listening to a new album I bought by Lush. I was shocked when halfway through the album this song started to play:

Most people like hearing to ABBA, but don't admit it. I had my time when I was young that I listen to them all the time, then it cooled down a bit and now I listen to them back again! They are good and a legend!
