I grew up in an era when most of us wore jockstraps just about anytime you turned around. When I played basketball, tennis, swam, I wore a jock. When I umpired baseball, played softball, and even sometimes when I played racquetball, I wore a jock and a cup. I also wore tighty-whities for underwear. These days when I go commando because underwear is chafing me I find it uncomfortable, almost painful sometimes. I wonder if my balls just became accustomed to what I grew up with. I am often in a gym where a lot of young guys play basketball. You can see their boxer shorts hanging out over their basketball shorts. And this is heavy duty basketball. All I can think of is pain. Could it be that their balls just adapt to what they have exposed them to? It must be true. Boxer shorts and basketball--ugh!

mostly when playing a sport or exercise I would and still wear boxers I owned one jock in my lifetime and did not like it too uncomfortable. now there are activities I would recommend a jock cup for protection example umpire baseball games but now a days most players wear compression shorts to keep their junk together. if you notice now a days football players have a VPL an outline of their cock and balls showing through their uniforms no jock strap lines on their asses any more. like I said before I wore and wear boxers for my activities and have never had ball pain

"I grew up in an era when most of us wore jockstraps just about anytime you turned around. " Same here, a jock was required attire in PE class in both Jr and High School. Growing up with tighty whities also made a difference, as my balls always felt support, that does not exist with the boxers at the time. Over the years, I have always felt the need for the ball support, and almost never wear boxers when dressed. As a result, there are very few boxers in the drawer.

I'm a usually a short boxer briefs/trunks kind of guy, and I wouldn't wear less support while working out or playing sports. I did play street ball in high school while wearing regular boxers and while I don't recall pain at the time, it's not something I would go back to. I have never worn a jock with a cup but I do like jockstraps and bikini briefs that are like jocks but with an ass panel attached to the waistband. They're great for working out or for daily wear. I think balls adapt to some degree, but I also think some guys just don't know what ball support feels like, so they don't know what they're missing.

When I was at school we were not allowed to wear anything under our gym or football shorts. However for cricket a box was permitted when batting.
You had to freeball in gym shorts at school? And do you mean you could wear boxers for cricket, or a jock/cup combo?

I grew up back in the 70's. In PE it was mandatory jocks and short shorts. We had jock strap checks about twice a week. All the guys would line up on the side of the gym and drop their shorts to expose their jock for the gym teacher to check.
Thinking back it was odd doing that since the girls were on the other side of the gym looking. Guess that's why I'm so open minded about nudity and showing off to anyone.

I was at a UK school in 70/80s (briefs were the fashion) but we were told unless you have a change of underwear for after showers you'd not to wear any for pe etc.
Very rare a lad would pack a 2nd pair lol
I think rule was waived for cricket and you'd stick a box in,

I also think some guys just don't know what ball support feels like, so they don't know what they're missing.

I think this is what it really comes down to. It's just like guys that have only ever worn cheap boxers or boxer briefs. They don't realize there's better options out there that are more comfortable.

I'm not sure what your jock/cup combo is but a cricketer's protective box is a hard cup to protect the genitals worn inside one's y-fronts.

Interesting how different times and places things change. The “box” as you call it is the same as our cup. A cup in a molded piece of plastic made to cover and protect the genatilla. The fits into a jock strap with a pocket. The last time I wore one was in my early HS years.

I actually remember back in the day buying a jockstrap in a box that had a golfer on it. Even golfing was thought to be a sport that you were to wear a jock for. I didn't do that. It's clear that the jockstrap companies convinced us that they were necessary for men, especially "real" men.

I wore Jockey briefs as regular underwear, so that's what I wore for casual games of basket, baseball, soccer, whatever. But when I knew in advance we were playing something, I wore a jock. The only times I wore a cup was when I was pitching intermural baseball. Even with the cup, a baseball hit right back in line with my crotch still hurt.
