I remember very well going into HMV to buy a VHS tape that was, essentially, a silly bit of titillation for straight women, rated 18. A main character went around a sports centre/changing room watching men go into sports kit, in the showers etc, all soft (of course) all just being watched, essentially. There was no real erotic element, it was essentially a record of fact that men got naked for sports, and here is a soft penis every so often to make it shocking or salacious.UK in 1990s had the Obscene Publications Axt 1959 as its cornerstone which banned anything which might “deprave or corrupt” or was “obscene”. Courts could ultimately make a decision on what this was, but basically it meant no porn. This was books as well as film. For film the effective prohibition was any film of female genitalia, hard cocks, any prolonged focus on tits, bums or sex act (which was probably simulated anyway). Basically nothing was available.
There were laws which required classification of UK video, and meant a no to porn. And there were laws against import of foreign material, which could prohibit even quite tame stuff.
The laws were primarily against the production and distribution of porn, but possession and viewing could be illegal. @Hunglincolnlad was probably breaking the law in viewing his first porn. The mate who rented it to him certainly was. Then there was the social stigma if caught. Viewing porn was terrifying! The practicalities were a VHS video player. Most had one of these in a family home connected to a television, but tape often tangled and could be difficult to remove. Few people had the facility to copy a VHS tape, and anyway amateur copies were usually very poor quality. The actual film quality for porn viewed was poor.
And that’s before thinking about the actual porn. Mostly it was unremarkable. Overwhelmingly it was straight, but it was pretty tame straight stuff and often repetitive.
It was perhaps very much of the UK vibe in the 1990s, more of a giggle than anything explicit. The inevitable changing of the guard re:censorship law would be racing around the corner like a runaway train but until then we had to be satisfied with "Eurotrash" on Channel 4.
I'll keep this on topic by recalling the first time I saw a post-reform porn magazine in a shop, and the first R18 film I watched. It blew my mind (and my cock) to see erections and spunk in the UK, and legally too. I know many forum members will have been early adopters of the Triga films, showing gay fucking and sucking and spunk, albeit with terrible editing and production values at the start. It blew my mind (and my cock) to watch Triga knowing that only a few years earlier I had had to have made do with a "Vulcan" or "Euroboy" stolen from the one shop in town that stocked them.
It's all very innocent, looking back!
