Was that clip real? Scary thought. I was always and still am intrested in nature and his powers, especially earthquakes. But wouldn't be in one that heavy! Just run outside in an open area and ran away from the coastline and go higher up.

I remember the Northridge quake here, looking out of my bedroom window and seeing the landlady's 2 story chimney swaying back and forth.

It is a fact of life here in southern California, Orange County to be exact.

I bought a house in Portland, OR, a couple of days before that quake ... for $139K.

Sold it a dozen years later for just shy of $500K.

By the way, don't get used to an Oregonian saying nice things about Californians. It may never, ever happen again .

Where I lived in California the San Andreas Fault ran nearly under my family's home in Daly City. We were subject to many tremors.

The fault runs like an enormous scar across parts of California where the Pacific plate grinds against the North American plate. There are a number of dramatic photos that show the zone of friction.

It may have been '64 or '65 and we lived just outside of Ft. Lewis, WA. And I think this was the big, giant one that hit Alaska simultaneously with the Pacifc Northwest.

It was Good Friday in 1964. The Alaska earthquake measured over 9.2 on the Richter scale and unleashed tsunamis over 100 feet. There were about 115 people killed, most of them from the wave. The Pacific Northwest is in a subduction zone and will likely see another big quake sooner than Southern California. The only other earthquake that measured over 9 in recent times was the Chile earthquake in 1960. They've happened before; they will happen again.
