Flags A-Z

The endless Spanish heritage in the US. Why does one of its key states honor Castile?

It is known by many that the Alabama state flag is a tribute to the Cross of Burgundy, so important in the history of Spain, but the Castilian reference in its shield is less known.

The current shield was officially adopted in 1939 and pays tribute to all the countries that at some point exercised sovereignty over the territory: Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederation and the United States.

This is the reason why, in the upper right quarter, we can see the emblem of Castilla y León, which represents Spanish sovereignty over Alabama between the 16th century and the end of the 18th century.

That one of the most important states in the United States uses this symbol, with its characteristic rampant lion and the golden castle on a red background, is further proof of the glorious Spanish past on the continent.

The flag of Bonaire, adopted on 11 December 1981, represents the Dutch island in the Caribbean Netherlands. Bonaire commemorates Flag Day on September 6 annually, the traditional date Europeans first arrived on the island.

The flag has a large dark blue band in the lower right corner and a smaller yellow band in the upper left corner. The dark blue and yellow bands represent the sea and sun respectively while the dividing white strip represents the sky. The yellow band was formerly red as a reference to the Dutch flag, but was changed at some point to avoid having two separated sections of red (from the star). The coloured bands are separated by a white strip, inside of which is a black compass and a red six-pointed star.

FLAGS & BULGES (II)
CARIBBEAN BULGES

The flag of Saint Lucia consists of a cerulean blue field charged with a yellow triangle in front of a white-edged black isosceles triangle.

The colours and symbols of the flag carry cultural, political, and regional meanings. The blue epitomises the sky and the sea, specifically the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea which encircle the country. The black and white allude to the harmonious relationship between the black and white races. The yellow symbolises the sunshine, as well as prosperity. The triangles represent the Pitons, which are twin volcanic cones located in the southwest part of the island and unity; Gros Piton and Petit Piton are a national symbol of Saint Lucia.

The flag of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly

The seal includes the full coat of arms in a white disc surrounded with a wide rim, with double edge, in the same shade of green (darker than the national flag). The emblem’s size on the flag seems to be around half the flag’s height.

This is a ~3:4 vertical triband of green, white and red, with a narriow horizontal white strip throughout, thus forming a sort of white cross and dividing the field into four squares--green in the upper hoist and lower hoist, red in the upper fly and lower fly. In the center, the town arms: vert a flying torch or lit gules and winged argent between two rail cross-sections argent in chief and two cogwheels or in base. Two black sledgehammers palewise as supporters, and on a green scroll the motto Osasco cidade trabalho (meaning "Osasco, city [of] labor") in golden capitals.
