Hi all,

Do any of you have a flexible working or homework approach to your job? I have a few job offers to pick from after my MA but don't know whether a formal office environment or home environment would be better?

Let me know of any thoughts or experiences!

I split my time - I prefer it to doing either exclusively.

Being in the office all of the time would drive me nuts, but always working from home would be a bit isolating IMO, although it's great if I really need to focus.

I split my time as well. It’s nice to have the structure and socialization of the office, but it’s also pretty cool to not to have to commute and be able to work in your jammies. Plus the coffees better.

I loved the work from home job I had. I only had to occasionally go into the office for meetings. I'm an introvert and a home-body, though. I still had my alarm set to get up in time to prepare, showered, ate breakfast, and otherwise prepared myself for work mode. It just was work mode that was done while in pj pants and a tank top. I know some folks would miss socializing and for others, they don't have the self-discipline for it. For myself, it was fucking fantastic.

In my limited experience it depends on a few things:

The business & office's culture and expectations. Of late, some remote workers are expected to respond quicker to communications than in-office employees. Do you think you could be as productive (If not more at home)?

I haven't had the chance to go 100% remote. It does sound attractive, but I would be somewhat concerned about potential communication breakdown.

I totally understand trying to avoid the open office plan. A mix seems nice. I'll PM you.

Is this your first job or are you still young with not much real work experience? What type of industry/business are you in?

If so, I would suggest working in the office at least part time, if not full time. Don’t do full remote yet. It’s important to develop relationships regardless but when you’re a newbie and learning the ropes, face to face is the best way to go.

That said, I’ve WFH for years. It works for my situation being that I live in a rural area, my industry readily supports it (cloud software with a lot of off shore resources in other countries I wouldn’t see any way), and I’ve been working for years and have plenty of experience.

WFH has its perks but there are disadvantages. If you are not structured and organized, you might need the work environment to be productive. Of course there is the socialization you might miss out on. It’s not the same over instant message or phone calls only. And I highly recommend that you have a dedicated work space at home. You have to physically be able to shut your workspace off from the living area so you have division between work and personal life. Or else, it is very easy to get into a rut… You never know when work ends and your personal life begins.

I wish I could write smart-ass comments for comics from home. I'd make extra money retired, and use the money to travel.

Someone beat you too it. ;)

People keep trying to get me to be a stand- up comic. I say no. So, they're trying to get me to write a book of all my experiences delivering the mail. I'm thinking about writing stuff down after I retire. It'll be an insane but true book for sure.
