The thing is, many of us remember when films were literally made as a specific genre of softcore pornography - actual movies intended to sexually arouse the same way as hardcore porn, usually with some kind of narrative, and simply not depicting penetration.
Whereas now with the advent of the internet and cheaply created low budget/amateur porn, people consider anything that depicts any kind of nudity to be "softcore porn". Which perhaps under those broader definitions it is, but some of us have a longing for the days when the definition was a little more narrow.
So when people post a video of a guy posing naked, with or without a hard on, or jacking off but not cumming, as "softcore porn"... it leaves a lot to be desired when we're looking for something else.

In the UK up until the late 1980s, hardcore porn was anything that showed an erect cock - gay, straight, solo, couples. So an 18-rated video specifically aimed at turning you on in those days wasn't even as explicit as the kind of things shown on Netflix now : UK Bel Ami releases were something like an episode of Elite, without the plot or dialogue!
I remember things differently. UK laws restricted the showing of any form of penetration including oral, but hard ons were fine. That's how you got things like the 'Dagenham Dave" series, and frequently there would be the softcore Bel Ami (and other studio) edits for UK release that would show everything up until actual penetration and then cut to other angles and shots - but they showed plenty of hard dicks.
