I’ve long wanted to go commando for a variety of reasons — minimalism, health benefits, the freeing feeling and so on — but I’ve never done it full time or even most of the time because of the downsides. Mostly pants getting sweaty and dirty more quickly (I don’t want to change them as frequently as I currently am my underwear) and rougher fabric on my circumcised penis.
I’ve been thinking about solutions to this but haven’t nailed one down yet.

I’ve considered just wearing loose boxers or even sizing them up, but so far I’ve had to size up two sizes just to make sure that the seam at the taint doesn’t touch my low hanging balls. Any recommendations on boxers that avoid this while not looking super oversized would be great. As well as sweatpants or joggers with a roomy seat that also accommodate this (but not necessarily super loose overall).

There are also pants that are made to go commando in with an extra layer of antibacterial fabric where it matters most, but even with these I wouldn’t go that much longer without washing (Pakker Trousers | Free Your Dick - because the world is full of uncomfortable trousers!). They’re also just nice linen pants though so don’t regret the purchase.

My newest idea was to just replace underwear with very soft, liner-less (athletic) shorts that can both be worn alone or as ”underwear” but I haven’t found any yet that truly fit this. Mostly they haven’t been soft enough. Would like some recommendations here too.

Or if you have any other or better solutions I would to hear about them!
(For product recommendations: I’m in Germany so US only brands are out)

Firstly it's great to hear you want to go commando, I've done it about 40yrs now,
Personally I'd say just go for it, in whatever you wear, I really don't have cleanliness or sweat issues, more air flow less humidity.
In cooler months maybe try long John type underwear, they tend to be loose and comfortable
Your balls will definitely thank you for the hanging space

I have a lot of precum, plus there’s always “the last drop”, so I’m really not comfortable “just going for it” long term I’m afraid, otherwise I wouldn’t have asked this in the first place.
Can I ask how long you go before washing pants?
And I’m not sure what kind of long johns you have, but any I’ve tried are not loose and comfortable at all, without wearing good pouch underwear underneath, I wouldn’t last through the day in them.

Hi Hotsprings,
For me, boxers were the best compromise when I wanted to switch from wearing briefs, but was hesitant to freeball. At first, it was standard woven boxers. A few years back, I found knit boxers that stretch and move with you; more comfortable. Knit boxers are available in cotton and microfiber. After I was accustomed to hanging freely while wearing boxers, freeballing felt virtually the same.

Sounds pretty perfect for my use case! Are there any particular microfibre knit boxers you can recommend, especially in terms of being loose enough to truly let everything hang?

I like Nautica brand. The top photo is a selection of their cotton knit boxers. The bottom photo features their microfiber boxers that are really lightweight. I also bought knit boxers from Fruit of the Loom that are equally comfortable.

Unfortunately both are somewhat tricky to source here in Germany (or at least have a big markup attached to them), but the keyword knit boxers should hopefully help me. Thanks!
Do you buy them in your regular size or do you size up? I definitely felt like I had to size up with woven boxers or the middle seam would constrict my balls.

I would recommend knit boxers too. Bamboo sourced fabric is really comfortable, and you might want to search the term
“modal” boxers. Best thing is, they double as lounge shorts and pj bottoms.

This is why I wear a swim jock under board shorts. Either that, or hold my thumb in the waistband when I get out of the water to let air in the top of the shorts.
Better looking like that than just showing an acorn

I agree, I wouldn’t like it if I looked like that in public either
I don't think the guy in the picture is wearing a board shorts but a regular running shorts. I wear board shorts and it doesn't cling like that. And it has thicker material in that area.
