I have had a problem with recurring balanitis for a number of years. After trying several things suggested by different doctors I finally settled on a prescription of clotrimazole and betamethasone and used that for a couple of years. It helped but never completely cleared up the problem. On a whim I asked my urologist last year if it would be safe to use 1% clotrimazole (over the counter athletes foot creme) for an extended period. He said why not? So I lathered a large glob all over my glans and foreskin twice a day for a month. The balanitis cleared and now if even a hint of it shows up I slather it for a day or so and that clears it up. I also smear some over my urethral opening. Although I understand many docs suggest circumcison, my urologist said I could consider it but he didn't really recommend it and my primary doc told me it was not necessary. But as is always the case you should consult your medical provider rather than taking full advice from nonprofessionals.
