It is a conundrum for him.
His livelihood depends on his work and he is in an industry(not theatre) that still does tend to pander to the image of the straight hearthrob for the masses.
It easy for us to sit on the sidelines and demand he come out to advance the cause of acceptance, but not so much for him when he finds he gets very little roles forthwith in film & TV.
Is it a moral conundrum or can you look at it from purely a practical business decision.

Correct. Same goes for AFL and NRL players. Gotta feel for them.

Absolutely correct. If he does publicly come out he runs the risk of limiting his employment. It's stupid, wrong and sad but it's a fact of the world we live in. He typically plays the heartthrob role and that sells much better to the target audience if he/the network can sell the fantasy that he's attainable in real life. Financially it makes sense for him to live a private life and honestly it's nobody's business who he chooses to sleep with anyway. He's not exactly subtle about it anyway but he's not shouting it from the roof tops either. I think he generally balances it well.
I've heard a story (and have no proof that it's true, it's just what I heard from someone in the industry) that back in his Packed To The Rafters days that he wanted to take his then boyfriend as his date to the Logies (Australia's television awards like a poor version of the Emmys) but the network told him he couldn't as he had to maintain a public appearance of being straight to continue to appeal to the show's fans. It's a disgusting treatment of him, if true but probably explains his stance on the issue.

That might be so in Hollywood, but not in Australia. And let’s be honest he hasn’t done that much TV work and almost every male actor in stage shows is gay. Him coming out won’t be an issue.

Also channel 7 tend to have very homophobic viewers, it’s why there’s no gay characters and when they attempt to test the waters it ends the same way

Not so. Theatre is very gay friendly but film and TV not that much.
There are few gay characters on Oz TV and they are normally played by straight actors.
If it were that easy, he would come out.
Matthew Mitcham won the 2008 Olympic gold medal in diving. The first for a male Australian since 1924 and he failed to find sponsors post Olympics whilst the lesser straight sportsmen had no trouble with the sponsors lining up.
