They said the new season would remove any romantic arcs from Wendnesday's story. Hunter's character was a fake love interest as he was revealed to be the villain and escaped in the last episode. So, he will probably stick around as one of the antagonists.

It’s extremely pointless just to keep a character around for another season just to be killed off when they could have done it last season, instead of making us fans of both Hunter and Tyler wait two and a half years to find out what happens next. It’s obvious they have extra plans for him and his story for them to keep him around. Cause if they don’t, then that is just really poor writing on their part.
