I have to disagree here. He ended up like 90 points away from bronze, so even if he had scored, say, an 80 on the dive he screwed up, it wouldn't have been close. As someone else pointed out, the top 3 were so far ahead of the rest of the pack, that it's clear they deserved their medals.
That's not meant to be a criticism of Jack though. He had a bad day. Everyone does, and in general he should be proud of everything he has achieved so far (including the well-earned medal in his other event this year).
He took the loss hard. He apologized to his fans, coaches, supporters, etc. of not being able to bring it home this time around. I feel really bad for him - he did bring it home. A medal doesn't mean he failed. We should all have Jack's discipline and work ethic.

This is a hard competition. Any losses now make his past and future successes all the sweeter. It's not over for him: he has the next Olympics.
