So it is now being suggested that public sector workers should work
longer, contribute more to their pensions, and settle for less and,
behold, we have an outcry!
It has to be admitted that some public sector workers are less well
paid than others. However the fact remains that the public sector as a
whole has had it good for many years with generous levels of
remuneration and, in many cases, opportunities to retire early on good
pensions. Given the current economic circumstances in which many
private sector workers face the very real prospect or having to work
beyond 65 instead of getting to retire at 60 or even earlier, surely
the time has come for a levelling of the playing field?
