Just saw on news he is gay. Majic is supporting him. Any thoughts?

Well, I will say that after seeing the video of his son that was on TMZ, there's no doubt he is gay.

But good for Magic for supporting him. It's what any good parent would do. He's from my hometown, and I'm glad to see that.

Several of my employees were gay and their parents disowned them. Nice to see a very public figure support his son!!!!!

Good for Magic Johnson.
Mark Cuban has gone on record that he would welcome an openly gay player on his team.
I wonder if this will be the start of sports figures no longer using anti-gay slurs.

Not to mention that Magic Johnson did received a lot of flack for being HIV positive. Remember that news back in the 90s?

I'm glad too that Magic is indeed supporting his son. However, I wish such a public gay figure wasn't quite SO effeminite. I mean, a purse??? I actually would've rather him have identified himself as a transvestite than gay.
In your opinion

Yes, I saw him too. He's pretty overweight, carries a strap purse, and should be on RuPauls Drag race soon.

I will try and clarify even though I don't feel I should have to. I have absolutely no problem with guys like Magic's son. I'm friends with some and care about them very much. However, the media just eats up a soundbite such as the one with Magic's son. Likewise, when the gay pride parade is covered, the extremes are most often shown, when, of course, the majority of gay men and lesbians lead very similar lives to those "straight" people.

I guess because I'm 46 I'm a little more sensitive to this than younger people because back in the day homosexuals were much more ostracized. I admit the climate has changed exponentially for the better. However, when I hear people---including gay people---snickering over the appearance of someone like Magic's son, I'm angered at the press drooling over posting him. I'm also frustrated that Magic's son would be posted caring a purse on the very day he "comes out" publicly.

I'm not saying I don't pass judgement on certain people, gay or straight. I'm human.

My problem with your statement was how you decided that his being effeminate made you want him to declare himself as a transvestite. Why? Why should he declare himself as anything other than who and what he is?

I did feel the handbag was all wrong for the outfit but I've never been that up on the latest fashion so perhaps it's the correct item to go with an all black outfit.

You are overreacting. Let the ignoramuses think whatever they want to think, but at the end of the day the boy is being whom he feels he is, himself. Femmophobia is a travesty to the LGBT fold and it's so annoying when I hear so many men attempt to tear down someone that is secure and comfortable in their own skin. It is hard enough in this world to come to complete and honest terms with yourself, so we need to accept everyone for whom they are.

I respect his son. Who he is, how he dresses, whatever. As someone said above though, and I have to agree, is while I have no problem with the effeminate part of our gay population, why is it when they ostracize a gay man, 99% of the time it's a gay man that happens to be effeminate? It simply shows me that there is still a lot of ignorance out there. While it is certainly a part of our population, can't we see the other side of our population too? We work, we dress the same (ok, well usually better! LOL), we have the same concerns, money, health, work, etc. Why does the "gay public figure that gets ostracized" always have to be effeminate? It gives the rest of the viewing nongays the perception that all gays are like that and I'm like WTF we are NOT all like that. There is not anything wrong with it mind you, and I admire his being himself. But come on, when is enough enough? You don't see them ostracize Neil Patrick Harris on shows like TMZ? Why? Because there is nothing really for the str8 public to laugh at or whatever. It simply drives home more homophobia.

I'm what most would call a very "straight acting" gay man. Not on purpose but by design. I'm tall, stocky and don't have the affect that many would associate with stereotypes of gay men. However, were it not for the out and proud, "stereotypical" gay men, we would all still be hiding in closets and discussions of gay marriage and equal rights would not have happened. You should be ashamed of yourself. And I'm older than you. Being 46, you more than others, should know better.

I'm surprised to read that you consider yourself more sensitive - I think your comment was pretty insensitive. You should use your age and life experience to be more accepting of others, not as an excuse to be exceptionally judgmental. Maybe you should familiarize yourself with the expression "older and wiser".

He's gay AND fat?!?!?! Man, this kid just can't catch a break!! I'll pray for him.
