It's been progressed at such a breakneck speed that I just cannot keep up.
Like I would understand if this was parceled out over weeks or even months. Slowly we would see Callum's reasoning and we can adjust and process it.
But it's literally gone from Callum being nearly completely absent, to an appearance where he talks about his commitment to Ben but kisses Johnny, then to a full-on fling with Johnny, and next week to feeling jealous and starting what sounds like an actual affair?
It's been, what, 3 episodes of this? Maybe 4 or 5 if we include whatever happens next week? Collate the actual screen time so far and you get maybe 15 minutes. Probably 20mins after next week.
So in the span of literally 15-20 minutes Callum has gone from being a devoted husband and father to a lying cheat who doesn't seem to care about what this affair will do to his family, his daughter, or his husband.
That's actually insane. Worse, it's incomprehensible. It's one thing to make Callum as a character look truly awful - I can respect that decision - but at this speed it's just overwhelming and nonsensical. Like I can't process this because the character keeps spiralling downward at such a rate that I don't even know what's happening or how I should feel about it. And we are getting absolutely nothing from Callum about how he feels about it other than 30 seconds of guilt.
My only explanation is that they got the go-ahead on this plot two months ago when they spoke to Bowden, and so pulled this together crazily quick. I can only assume they are rushing hard to get to a particular plot point in time for something - I assume Bowden's guest stint - and so they've had to burn through all this material insanely fast.
