Doesn’t Marley just grow old and dies in his sleep? Quite frankly they should have said they fucked up and didn’t keep up with Sargent’s rabies shots and he caught it and had to be put down.

I was going to include the film clip where he takes the gun from his mom and shoots the dog, but I’m sure the actor was under 18 when he made the film. Look it up, great drama!

In the book, at least, Marley has behavioral issues that are a problem throughout his life. The wife has a miscarriage and enters a period of depression. The family has to move out of their neighborhood. Eventually, Marley's health problems lead to a final trip to the vet to be put to sleep.

The big difference is that the family eventually does have children, they find a new home and the marriage survives.
